My experience has been very great so far. The interior is easy to keep clean, the all wheel drive works great, the payload capacity is huge, and I can tow more than I used to with my full size 4wd truck. I know everyone complains about gas mileage, my Durango gets an honest 15 to 16, but the truck I replaced it with only got 8! Another bonus is that you can fit 4 x 8 sheets inside and they lay flat, and it's almost impossible to overload this truck but unfortunately you can't close the back hatch, and because of the folding seats, it wants to lean towards falling out of the truck, so remember to lay a 4 x 4 at the back before hauling your sheets so they tip towards the inside of the vehicle. But oh well, most trucks aren't 8 foot boxes anymore either.
I haven't qute figured out when I'm supposed to turn the dial to 4 wheel drive, but if I get stuck, I'll give my 4 wheel a try and see if that helps.
I have had it through everthing and never got it close to stuck yet. The all wheel drive is better than 4 wheel high in my old truck, and 4 wheel low in my old truck could get you out of anything unless you buried it to the floorboards, but with the all wheel drive, I can still steer my truck, so I am pretty happy with that.
I have good ground clearance, I like that. parking blocks can be a nuiscance.
The wipers are very large. and it has a big bulky bottom to that too. I have noticed that the wipers don't shed ice very well and it can be difficult to get the blade warm enough to shed the ice on cold days. I wonder how much I am going to have to pay for that huge wiper blade...
The back wiper is fine, but I have difficulty finding the control, I always confuse it with the heater blower. They have a common vat for refilling and I wonder if it will freeze easily. But have yet to have that happen.
AC, gauges, heat, lights, cruise, etc... work fine, The radio reception is very good. I am in the country and get FM stations from 40 miles away.
I wish the seats had about 2 or 3 inches of extra leg support. Or maybe they should have an adjustable pullout piece like on my old 89 mustang.
The rear hatch is a little tricky to get used to, when it opens, you need to take two steps to the rear to avoid knocking youself out. Worse for your buddy who catches the sharp corner. It isn't terrible, but it takes some getting used to. I am under six foot tall, so I can walk under it when open fine, but be careful tall fellas.
The open hatch gets used as my extra garage workbench a lot. People complain it's too high, but I like it at that level, it makes a good extra saw horse and you even have a rear hatch light to be able to see. I keep an extra pencil, writing pad, tape measure, bungee cord, TA-50 chord, and an orange flag in the storage compartment, very handy. I would like to see it have those old station wagon style doors that could open a variety of ways. an opening rear window would be nice too for very very long items. But the roof will do.
Car companies just can't make a back hatch as good as the old 70's wagons. Lost technology, I guess.
I bought this truck because I like trucks, I use them for recreational off roading through mud and snow, getting carpenters and tools to job sites, and towing.
The Durango I bought is a base model with 4 wheel drive, and I had to get the tow kit installed at the dealership, I would have liked to have gotten the tow hooks, 4 low, and the sheild, but the price was unbeatable on this model so I took it.
It don't got a Hemi, leather seats, heated seats or third row seats either cause that would seem usesless to me.
I love the fold flat rear with the 48 inches between the wheel wells, that has been just great. The 4wd system is very capable, the towing ability is second to none, comfort and room is fine. For all the capability of this truck, 15 MPG isn't too bad, either. It handles nice, for a truck with good power for anything you need.
What I hate about this product...
Well, I got a bright white one and it looks a little like a refridgerater with headlights. I hate that most people who own them are soccer moms who have no need for a truck like this, and I hate that the four wheel low and towing equipment aren't standard.
