| bluestarmom's Full Review: Olympus Stylus Zoom 140 QD 35mm Film Camera |
In April 2002 my husband and I bought this Stylus Zoom 140QD camera at our local Wal-Mart, the night before our trip to London and Paris. We physically tried out several cameras on the sales floor, testing out their ease of use and comparing features. My husband is a most particular consumer. He decided this was the camera for him. I agreed wholeheartedly. We bought this camera to replace my aging Olympus Super Zoom 300, purchased new in 1988. This is our 3rd Olympus camera purchased between us.
The plus sides of owning this camera is all of the "new, updated" features and updated technology. I love the weather resistant clamshell slide open case with pop out flash and 38-140 zoom lens. Also there is the wide angle/telephoto lens button, easy to manipulate, plus the dioptomer adjustment button for those of us who are nearsighted. The flash range is 14 feet, with 6 flash modes. You can utilize flash off, night mode, fill in, auto mode, backlight mode, red eye reduction, depending on the shot you are taking. The self timer is great. I am usually behind the shutter clicking away. With the self timer I can use a mini tripod, set up the shot, and get into the photo. There is also the date/time mode with 6 separate settings. This is great when you have a lot of photos built up that need putting into albums. You can arrange them in chronological order by date.
There is not much I dislike about this camera. The only difficulties I encountered were with the loading of the film, and the auto focus. If you do not advance just the right film lead, the auto load will flash "empty", and you try again. I had one roll of film that rewound after I shot just 3 photos. I was a little worried. During our trip I shot 13 rolls of film in London, and 3 rolls on our 1 day trip to Paris. Not to worry as my photos came out crisp, clear, and with sharp true to life color. With the 140 zoom you have to be sure to completely focus before taking a shot. I found several photos I shot through the outside gate during the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, focused up close on the bars, and not clearly on the Guards inside. I shot many photos from the top deck of the open deck tour bus we were on. One I captured was a photo of the Queen Mum's coffin, draped with her flag and crown, inside Westminster Abbey. I have a photo with Prince Charles walking into the church taken the same way. Both photos came out clear. If I had a longer zoom I would have captured a bit better image. Overall I am extremely pleased with my photos.
