The DEJ611 incorporates Sony's new G-Protection - making the CD jog-proof - a godsend if you're the active type. I decided to give the new technology a whirl.
And to be quite honest, although it works fine, it's pretty difficult to justify the price. The performance is on a par with my Panasonic model - but then the Panasonic costs half the price, and it's 10-second ASM (anti-shock memory) was enough.
But enough about that. Let's consider what the Sony has to offer:
Long battery life: The manufacturers claim a battery life of 32 hours, but I found that this was only with the G-Protection OFF. This means that the battery life is dramatically reduced if you turn it on, and you have to have it on otherwise the CD jumps like anything. Crafty, eh?
Small size: At only 27mm thick, the Sony is undeniably thin, but not THAT much smaller than anything else. It's rounded off which gives it a slightly cute look.
But:
Average features: It's got the bog-standard shuffle/play/repeat, mega bass, hold etc that you will have seen a million times before. There's no remote control on the headphones, and for such a pricey model this is disappointing.
Overall: The portable CD market is now at it's peak, and I think that manufacturers are turning to new gimmicks to keep the public happy. Unfortunately, this new model is very superficial, and I feel that it's a blatent attempt to keep the prices of portable models high. For the price Sony are charging, you could get a player of equal performance for about half the price.
