| noelanvoyd's Full Review: Sony DAV-S300 Theater System |
If you're looking to set up a home theater system without a lot of hassle, the Sony DAV-S300 may be exactly what you want. All you need is a television; the system is perfectly sized for apartments, bedrooms, dorm rooms, and offices.
The Sony DAV-S300 combines a DVD player, AM/FM radio, a Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 receiver, five speakers, and a subwoofer.
What's great about the Sony DAV-S300?
-- Exceptional for playing DVDs. This system can decode both Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 audio, so you'll never need to worry about incompatible discs. While speaker output is limited to 30 watts per channel, the sound is as crisp and full as you'd expect for a small room system. Picture quality was also excellent, compared to other DVD players I've tried.
-- Set up is a snap, right out of the box. Each of the speaker wires is color coded, and it takes just a few minutes to plug them into the back of the unit.
-- Space saving. Since everything is in one unit, there aren't a lot of wires to mess around with, and it doesn't take up much shelf space.
What's not great?
-- Low wattage. The speaker outputs are limited at 30 watts per channel, a very low amount. For my apartment, this was no problem, since it was enough to disturb the neighbors during a showing of Gladiator. However, true audio afficionados looking to equip a larger room will find this unit to be dismal.
-- Doesn't work with all CD-Rs. If you burn your own CDs, the system won't work with them most of the time. Sony has not given an explanation as to why this is, but this is an important fact to keep in mind for some people.
-- Lacks an S-Video input. I tried to plug in my DIRECTV receiver's S-Video output in the Sony DAV-S300, but couldn't do so. The unit does have an S-Video output, so that your DVD movies can look very sharp on an appropriately equipped television, but the satellite picture could only be passed through with standard analog RCA jacks.
All in all, I am very pleased with my purchase. It's a quick, inexpensive way to add a complete home theater experience to your television.
