I love reading about the wacky, weird and wild. Well, I like it as long as I'm not the star of the story. Now, I have dared to venture into the Unbelievably Stupid. What did I find there? Believe it or not...some unbelievably stupid stuff.
505 Unbelievably Stupid Web Pages
I've known that I could find almost anything I wanted to on the internet. I helped save my husband's fingers when he had frostbite by running to the computer and finding what to do to save them until we could get to a hospital. I found my husband's hunting dog online. I've found hotels to stay at for my vacations. Now I've gone where no web surfer should go. To Dan Crowley's book of 505 Unbelievably Stupid Web Pages. There is a paragraph with a brief summary of what each website is about. Underneath that is a 2 or 3 sentence commentary by the author. Each site is rated on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 best rate) for the abnormality, stupidity, and entertainment value.
Where should I even start? How about www.ratemymullet.com? The URL says it all. More than you could ever care to know about the 80's haircut the "mullet". People have submitted photos and you can rate different mullet categories. Ummm yeah...I didn't spend a whole lot of time at that one. Abnormality: 7, Stupidity: 9, Entertainment: 6. Moving on...
What would life be without 7 badly drawn peas in a pod, with smiley faces drawn on them, dancing around to guitar music? I can't believe I watched it for more than a minute waiting for something to happen. The only thing that happened is the loss of a few minutes of my life to www.sevenpeas.com. Egads! Abnormality: 10, Stupidity: 9, Entertainment: 6.
Finally, a site that gave me a chuckle. I tried The Hobbit Name Generator (http://www.chriswetherell.com/hobbit/). I will now be known as Dimple Smallburrows of Sandydowns. Please address me as such whenever our paths cross. OK, really I'm joking...quit calling me Dimples. Really...stop. I won't finish this review if you don't quit it! Thank you...moving forward. Abnormality: 7, Stupidity: 6, Entertainment: 7.
That's 3 of the sites mentioned in this book. Imagine another 502 web pages out there, with a lot of them being worse than the three I mentioned.
The Author
Dan Crowley wrote this book in 2003 at the age of 17. He came across the idea while "googlewhacking". To googlewhack you go to google.com and type in a two word phrase that makes no sense. His example is swedish rappers. To his amazement google returned 1,820 matches. From that experience he decided to entertain us with what he believes to be unbelievably stupid web pages. He did a good job and ,usually, I agreed with his ratings.
I Can't Believe...
I spent so much time looking at these sites. I knew they were, for the most part, going to be stupid...yet, off I went into the great cyberspace yonder to verify that these sites were really out there. Yep, they are. I did find a few web pages that were no longer up and running. So many more should have been shut down.
505 Unbelievably Stupid Web Pages is an entertaining book, whether the sites were functioning or not. Dan Crowley has a bright future in store for him. His sarcastic wit had a good edge to it, without being too mean. He seems sincere in his disbelief that people...at least 505 people...have spent a lot of time being unbelievably stupid. I'm not sure what it says about me that I visited so many of them. It's like any other disaster, you know it's going to be bad, but you have to check it out.
I recommend this book to anyone that has a computer. It just wouldn't be the same if you couldn't read about a site and go..."no way, there can't be a site like that"... just to find out that it really does exist. I spent a lot of time picking the book up, reading and then heading to the website mentioned. I was amused, disgusted and then amused again at the things this book lead me to. I had a blast!
Thanks for reading, Dimples
