| stephenkay65's Full Review: Panasonic SC-PM11 CD Shelf System |
When I bought my newest little stereo equipment gem I didn't realize how happy I'd be using this product. The biggest reason I bought my Panasonic SC-PM11 was it's compact size, great sound, full functionality, and good looks... oh yeah, and the very low price.
I personally don't look for stereo's that will knock over buildings and fill up one wall in my living room- so if that's what you like than this stereo is too small for you. If you'd like something special for your kids, or know someone who'd really like or could use a good little stereo, then read on.
The compact Panasonic SC-PM11 has been out for over a year, and for good reason. It's a great value for the prudent buyer (and a buyer looking for a table top stereo). This stereo is a very attractive silver that puts your eyes at ease. It's not like the emergency vehicle disco tec (or discotheque if you like) lighting arrays of other comparable table-top stereo's. You can't use this stereo as a Christmas decoration, but that's something I like about it.
It has a five CD changer, tapedeck and radio. It's equipped with karaoke capability, so if you have avid up and coming pop stars that like to sing along (but don't sound as good as they think) you might want to hide this feature from them. It's equipped with an auto-off function and timer so you can fall asleep listening to your favorite Simon and Garfunkel CD or 'nature sounds' cassette, or even wake up to some heavy handed "Offspring" or "Guns and Roses" to start your new day off right. It has the Tape Program Sensor (TPS) to make it easy to fast forward to a favorite song on cassette. Recording is simple between radio or CD and cassette.
There are six different sound settings (no Bass or Treble knobs) of heavy, clear, soft, disco, live and hall. It's also equipped with a "Super Sound EQ" function that amplifies the effects of the treble and bass.
The stereo does not come with a microphone or any other extras (only the remote w/batteries and antennas). It's not equipped with the newest in speaker technology, it's the basic woofer/tweeter speaker, but it puts out great sound. You won't get surround sound from this little gem, and you can't hook it up to your TV (at least I haven't figured out how yet).
The point of buying this stereo is to get everything basic (multi-player CD, radio, cassette, good sound) for a very affordable price. It's best quality is it's value for the dollar ratio. It actually exceeds the quality of similar more costly stereo's.
If you travel, you should know that the stereo is dual voltage (110 V, 240 V) and may be taken along on your trip. It is also noteworthy to mention that the speakers are not magnetically shielded, so don't place them near your computer.
The few drawbacks I could find with the system don't amount to much. The five CD changer takes a few moments to load and change between CD's because the tray only fits one CD at a time. The buttons can be confusing, and at times I'd have to reread the owners manual to figure out how to perform some simple function. It also has a few functions that may only be performed using the remote (I hate that).
It's not a revolutionary stereo, it's an excellent quality product for a very reasonable price. I HIGHLY recommend this table-top stereo.
