vmadwop1's Full Review: Model 1938 Red Ryder Air Rifle
I bought my two older grandsons the Daisy Model 1938 Red Ryder Air rifle for Christmas a few years back. The boys are ten and eleven. I taught them both to shoot. I first taught them on our old Official Shooting Education BB gun that was used by my son's Cubscout troop. This one was made in 1980. This single shot BB rifle was also made by Daisy. The boys could not wait to get a rifle that would shoot more than one BB. After one year of learning how to be patient with the single shot rifle, I felt it was time to move up to the Daisy Red Ryder. I have a 1957 Daisy BB rifle and the two boys like to fight over it, so I thought this would make a nice Christmas gift. Daisy was a quality company in the 1950's and continues to be one today. There is a whole lot to be said about this company and the quality that is in all of the products produced in this country. However, I have heard that Daisy now has gone overseas like everything else. All the Daisy rifles we have are made in the USA.
I purchased two Daisy Model 1938 Red Ryder Air Ryder Rifles. I bought the rifles at Walmart for $29.95 each. The rifles can also be ordered on line. Daisy I am very happy to say ours were still made in the USA. The Red Ryder is made by Daisy at Rogers, Arizona. If there are any questions Daisy is found at http://www.daisy.com. I checked at the Walmart and the Red Ryder is still made in the USA, but the Buck is made in China.
Description The rifle comes in a cardboard box. There are three items in the box the rifle, safety booklet, and a complete operation manual. The total weight of the rifle is 2.2 lbs. The box has written on the outside for kids 10 and older. The stock is stained solid wood. The total length of the gun is 35.4 inches long. The action lever cocking is spring air. The ammunition for this rifle is .177 cal, 4.5 mm BB. The maximum distance for this rifle is 195 yards. On the left side of the rifle is a ring with a leather lanyard attached to it. In the old western days this leather was used to tie down the rifle secure so the rifle would not fall off the horse. This is what the old west rifles looked liked. The barrel has a small hole for oil. I taught the boys to use three and one oil on these rifles to keep them working properly. There is a side opening about one inch where the boys can load their BBs in the rifle. The Daisy Red Ryder has the capacity to hold 650 BBs. The rifle has a safety to keep on when the rifle is not in use. On the right hand side of the stock on the rifle is the name Red Ryder, with a cowboy riding a horse with a lasso. The Lasso spells Red Rider. The stock and the fore-stock are made out of beautiful wood and match perfectly. The barrel is made out of stamped steel. I believe the lever is made out of die cast. This rifle is very well built. The rear sight is adjustable for elevation.
The operating manual will stess 6 very important rules for the young beginner before she or he will ever shoot the first BB.
IMPORTANT POINTS FOUND IN THE MANUAL 1. Always read the manual before using this air gun. 2. Point in safe direction.
3. Keep fingers off the trigger until ready to shoot.
4. It is suggested to wear eye protection.
5. Keep the gun unloaded till ready to use.
6. Always know the target.
Experience The boys are getting ready to shoot their rifles. When they can tell all six rules from memory it is time to go outside and shoot. The BBs come in a funnel type clear container and are easy to put in. The old days was a cardboard pack and it spilled all over. Some stuff today is much better this is one of them. Both boys take a soda can and set it on the fence post. They cock the gun and look through the sight and squeeze the trigger. They both missed their target. I showed Joey how to press the gun on the sholder to shoot straight. His rifle is a perfect size. Little Gary's gun is about two inches too long. He will have to wait a little longer for his arm to grow. It should fit perfect in about another year. We are setting up some more targets and the boys are shooting their Red Ryder Air Rifle and having a great time. Daisy Model 1938 Red Ryder Air Rifle has been in this familyfor three generations.
