| dlstewart's Full Review: Tombow 68666 White Correction Tape Refill (1/6x394... |
I hate liquid white-out. So when the office purchased Tombow Correction Tape, I wondered how well it would work. I remembered using something similar way-back-when, only the white adhesive strips didn't roll on ... the user had to manually stick the strips over what needed covering. If one didn't lay the strips straight, problems! This new adhesive comes on a roll to better control straight-line application. I experimented to see how well it worked.
Description
The Tombow correction tape dispenser easily fits in the hand. It measures 3 1/2" long x 1 3/4" wide. The top of the dispenser is clear so that it is easy to see how much tape is left on the roll. (The tape measures 1/6" x 394" -- over 32 feet.) The bottom of the dispenser is gray. The tip of the unit, where the tape feeds out, is a grass-green color. Looking at this dispenser, I cannot see any metal. It appears constructed completely of plastic.
This is single-line correction tape. That means it will only cover one line of printed text at a time (covering a standard-size type font). The tape has two sides. As the tape is applied, the white cover-up part of the tape rolls onto the paper, while a smooth backing feeds into the dispenser. The white correction tape is on one spool. As the correction tape is used, the smooth backing winds onto a second spool.
Should the tape become loose on the spool, there is a rewind knob on the side of the dispenser. The top of the plastic knob is flat and resembles a flathead screw. Simply insert a fingernail into the slot and twist to tighten the tape.
This model is not refillable. However, Tombow does manufacturer a refillable correction tape dispenser.
Using the Correction Tape
This tape is easy to use. Simply hold the dispenser in either the right or left hand. Press the green tip of the dispenser to the paper at a 45-degree angle. Move the dispenser sideways, and the correction tape feeds from the spool onto the paper. When finished laying the tape, hold the dispenser upright and lift upward. This cuts the tape in a clean line. Lightly run the pad of the finger over the tape to make sure the tape has completely adhered. The tape applies dry ... no setting time required.
Note that sometimes this tape doesn't completely separate from the smooth backing. When this happens, an uneven, spotty line of correction tape rolls onto the paper. This is very annoying. Thankfully it doesn't happen too often. When this problem does occur, I simply run a new line of tape over the spotty mess on the paper.
I use this correction tape mostly on 20-pound copy and printer paper. People in the office have also used it successfully on magazine articles, various types of artboard/paper, calendars, multi- part forms, tracing paper and Avery labels. The tape works well on regular paper and fax paper, as well as acid-free papers. We have never tried applying this tape to textured surfaces, as we do not use that type of paper in the office.
A great feature of this tape is that it will feed through a fax machine without problem. It does not leave shadows on the fax copies being received. Handwritten, typed and computer printed corrections show nicely on this tape. If the tape is applied evenly to the paper, then whatever is typed or printed looks wonderful. When print fills a page, it is sometimes difficult to tell where the correction tape is.
Pencil, pen and markers show well on this tape, too. However, if using a marker, give the ink time to dry on the paper. When I use a Sanford Sharpie permanent marker on the tape, the ink will smudge if I don't let it sit and dry.
This tape isn't just for correcting errors, either. Cover-up smudges or line marks or splotches before making photocopies. I've found that paper with the correction tape on it runs well through the automatic copier feed.

Purchasing
Staples.com sells a variety of the Tombow correction tapes: refillable dispensers, disposable dispensers, different color tapes (canary, blue, pink), single-pack or multi-pack.
We purchase the two-pack Tombow correction tape from Staples for $5.79. A four-pack costs $9.99. Buying it individually costs $3.44. OfficeMax also sells the Tombow correction tape for about the same price, except buying it individually costs $3.99.
Summary
Despite having the Tombow Correction Tape sometimes not feed properly from the dispenser, I like it. This tape is certainly better than liquid white-out! It is clean and easy to use. I plan on using this type of correction tape for a long time. Anyone need a used clumpy bottle of white-out?
