What a wonderful reprise... (Reply to this comment)
by theeye
of the book from which I learned to read! As a young child, I heard this book read to me each night (by my father) and eventually began to read it myself -- first the very short poems and, in time, the more intimidating long verses. I still have my original dog-eared copy.

Thanks for a trip down memory lane! :-)

Well, now. I won't be writing a review on this book. (Reply to this comment)

You have done a wonderful job already.

I bought this book for my soon to be 3 year old daughter this past Spring and we love it. We both love the way the words flow together. My husband and I read her a poem from this book every night. Her favorites are The Shadow, The Swing, and The Wind. She recites The Swing when she is on her swing. LOL I've read The Shadow so many times to her that I have it memorized! It comes in handy to soothe my children's fussiness when we are driving a long distance in the car.

The only con with this book is that the language is hard for young children to understand since the words in the book are not common in today's language. I have remedied that to a point. For example, I will use the word meddle in conversation so that she will understand the poem Looking Forward better.

Other than that, I love this book!

I refer to both the book and your review. An excellent job, Helen! I appreciate the time you took to add references to Stevenson's works and quoting some of the better pieces in the book.

A job well done!

to which I agree 100%!

Having never read any of his poetry (until now), I'm not sure which I like better, his poetry or how you described it. Both so well crafted. Thank you for this treasure of a review!

Thank you for such a beautiful piece. While it is long, it is beautifully written (your words as well as the poem).

I will have to remember to purchase this one as even now I GREATLY enjoy viwing "life from a child’s point of view." 8-) I love the Shadow poem you chose to share with us... and smiled while reading through it. My daughter Ali (18 months) recently discovered HER shadow & I would LOVE to know what she is thinking when she sees it!

Great job here Helen!

Helen, what a wonderful tribute! (Reply to this comment)

I have very few childhood books left . . . my Dad was in the Navy and we moved every year. Since the total moving weight had to be kept down, many of my favorite books and toys were left in the hands of other children. My copy of A Child's Garden of Verses somehow made it through each winnowing process (during the last move, by hiding it in the springs under the driver's side car seat and listening to my dad complain about the uncomfortable seat all the way to Oregon).

I can still get lost in the pages. And, I have seen and recognized the child in the garden. Like looking in a mirror.

Thank you for this evocative review of a timeless book. I'm off to reread my copy, loose pages and all.

HEY, I was that kid!!! I used to pester my poor brother at the next desk with whatever I was learning that day... 'course, he often had earphones on, so I had to speak loudly to get through to him! Interesting that he called while I was reading this.

Another pogo job! ...t-þoo

I also have some memories of Robert Louis Stephenson's work. I have a poem that I memorized in 1st grade of his: "The Swing." I can still recite the poem even though I have a habit of easily forgetting things that I memorize (speeches, pretty much anything that I memorize when I have to do public speaking). No idea whether the poem is in the book but I would guess it would be:) Maybe I will hunt this book down sometime:) Thanks for the recommendation.

Marvelous review, and a shared favorite poem (Reply to this comment)
by isinga
I hate to admit it, but I received my first copy (which I quickly wore out by reading it to myself - really) when I was five years old -- in 1936! It has lived in a warm place in my heart's file of memories for all these years, leaving me feeling good that it will do the same for generations yet unborn as long as there are still literate parents. Thank you for the review.

One Of My Favorite Writers And Poets (Reply to this comment)

I nevere minded the gift of books, (clothing was another thing as a young girl in the time before...brand names!). This weighty tome was a gift from my godfather, and held a place of honor in our family.

Little hands had to be clean before turning these wonderous pages. Your excellent review brings these memories rushing back so vividly and the childish joy of discovery. Thanks for a trip back, and for the links to other RLS works. Casey

Oh what wonderful memories. I read that book, one verse at a time until I was done. And then, I went back and reread all my favorites. My Shadow was definitely one of them. But, I never could figure out exactly what an India-rubber ball was. I finally decided not to lose any more sleep over it and declared it a Pensy Pinky. Saved me years of therapy.

Great review,

I am sorry that I cannot just email you this since you don't have your email listed. I have recieved your comment, and so, here is my reply to your comment:

Pogomon,

I have never directly copied your profile. I was in the process of improving my profile and, I admit, took some ideas from it but never fully copied it. Isn't that what writers do, get ideas from others?

Anyway, I appreciate your concern and will change my profile so that it does not resemble your profile in any way. Thanks for notifing me of this in time! If you have any other concerns, feel free to post another comment or e-mail me about it.

Again, Thanks!
