IcePrincess1's Full Review: Sheri Reynolds - A Gracious Plenty: A Novel
I had this book recommended to me by a co-worker and even though I have a to read list as long as my arm, I decided to pick this book up for a try.
Sherri Reynolds did not disappoint me.
A Gracious Plenty is the tale of Finch Nobles. Burned as young girl Finch finds herself a social outcast in her small, conservative southern time. After the death of her mother, who never got over the horrible household accident that disfigure Finch, and her father, Finch is left alone with a crew of cats and the tending of the local cemetery.
And while Finch's story may already sound interesting, this is just the beginning.
Finch can communicate with the newly dead. She sees them walking. Observes how their lives mingle with the living. They make the rain and the rainbows. They urge the birds south in the fall and north in the spring. They make flowers and crops grow. They urge the sun to shine. They stay on earth until their earthly burdens are gone and they “lighten” fade on to their next spiritual level.
Finch has a few problems. Being an outcast is bad enough, but the dead are paralyzed by the haunting cries of the mayor’s baby, Marcus, who died under mysterious circumstances. The only person who helps him is the newly arrived William Blott, town drunk, who is revealed as a transvestite, whose influence fades as the townswomen he loves turns against him as they learn of his questionable tendencies and past.
The story is one of those great tales where there is no huge climatic plot. The plot is subtle and descriptive. While Finch finds kind ship and understanding, she doesn't truly find love, though it is alluded to. Reynolds has a great gift for the delicate rendering of characters so real you believe you could travel to some small, similar town and find them living there.
Needless to say, Reynolds could become a new favorite is she is a definite must read!
