Is it possible to love a set of golf irons too much? I didn't think so, until I bought these clubs - they just might make me change my tune!
Over the summer, I wanted to buy a good set of irons. I tried my friends clubs, which included Orlimar Trimetals, Wilson Fat Shafts, Ping Karsten and Eye 2's. I also hit many demo clubs at Dick's sporting goods, from the Taylor Made 300's to the Hogan Apex Edge. I also researched the internet for hours at a time. After hitting everything possible under the sun, I bought the Adams Tight Lies GT irons. Why? Read on:
1. Value. I bought these clubs on Ebay for $350, and they were BRAND NEW. The 3-iron still had the price tag on it. Dick's wanted $699 plus tax - that made these an incredible bargain.
2. Accuracy. I have a horrible slice, but the way these clubs are built I don't slice anymore. There's not a lot of correction here, but A TON OF PREVENTION. Most of the weight is at the heel of the club, and this helps close the face at impact. My ball now goes straight as an arrow, which is an absolute delight for me. Oversized heads are a plus and definitely help out as well.
3. Shaft. The bi-matrix shaft is the best of both worlds. You get the weight of steel with the cushy feeling of graphite. I got a mild case of frostbite several years ago, and using many sets of irons when I hit the ball the vibration feels unpleasant but not harsh, and I like the weight of steel versus graphite (personal preference here). With these, I feel the ball hit the club, but nothing else. Hats off to Barney Adams and his innovation.
**on a side note, if you are worried that the steel and graphite combination is fragile, the adhesive used to put them together was developed specifically for these clubs by 3M Labs. It was tested in a lab up to 4500 lbs of force, and at that point the STEEL - NOT THE GRAPHITE/STEEL BOND - snapped in two. 'Nuff said.
4. Ease of use. I could never hit my long irons with any consistency or accuracy, but the 3,4 and 5 irons are so easy to hit in this set it's frightening. After using these the first time, I began to find excuses to pull my 3-iron out. Need a driver? 30 yards to the green and need to bump and run? Have to putt? Break out that 3-iron, baby! It has replaced my Taylor Made Rescue club as the favorite club in my bag.
Is there anything not to like about these? Well, if you hook or draw the ball, these may not be the clubs for you. My dad hooks the ball, and it only got worse when he tried these irons (which I didn't think was possible). Also the grips, while classy looking, are not the best. First chance I get next season, these are being regripped with Golf Pride Softtie's.
If you are a low to mid handicapper, you will want to try the GT Tour model. The heads are smaller and offer more workability and feel than the regular GT model.
While I know some people are very brand loyal, I believe noone should pay more than $450 for a set of irons - it's just too much money. Callaway makes a great set of irons, but they're WAY overpriced - you know $400 of the money you spend is just to have the Callaway name on your clubs (this is called the NIKE effect).
These irons are every bit as good (or better) as any iron set you will find at a fraction of the price. If you happen to buy these clubs, you will not be disappointed! These are worth every penny and more!
***Update 8/9/02: I have now had these clubs for about a year, and I am even more convinced that they are some of the best clubs on the market. My handicap is down 9 strokes, and it's definitely not due to my putting or driving - these clubs ROCK, pure and simple.
My friend needed to borrow my clubs one night (forgot his), and the next day he offered to trade me his Ping I3's for these clubs! I told him no thanks, I love the clubs too much, but in retrospect it was probably a bad decision. I could have sold the Ping's at a profit and bought another set of these irons!
I will probably never part with these clubs - I just love 'em too much. Unless, of course, Barney Adams comes up with something better - then, I just might change my tune!
