I understand that a product's usefulness differs according to who uses it and for what purpose they use it, so I try be as objective as possible and try to address features from as many different angles as possible in my reviews.
With Photoshop, I think it can be effectively used for any kind of bitmap image editing work, be it line art, drawings, or photos. While vector graphics are supported, however, this is not Photoshop's area.
In your question as to Photoshop being an effective tool for photos or for the web, the question really extends to editing images for either print or web. Photoshop has traditionally been a product for print media and it excels in working with different color models, and has only recently provided web graphics optimization with the bundled product, ImageReady.
My misgivings of Photoshop for web use weren't in regard to editing graphics for the web, but in using it for web designs and layouts. Some people may regard web design as "painting" a web page, but such features belong more in web editors than they do in a graphics program.

Very nice, but what do you use Photoshop for? In my opinion, it wins hands-down in photo-editing (www.b3ta.com for some examples), however it's not all that great for the web. What application are you basing this review on?
