I rarely take pain medications, other than an occasional aspirin. However, after an unfortunate experience at the hands of a dentist, apparently a graduate with honors from the Marquis de Sade School of Dentistry, I discovered an urgent need for quick and effective pain relief. My face was swollen and bruised, my jaw ached like heck, I had a blinding headache, and I was seriously bummed out.
I went directly from the dentist to the drugstore and picked up a bottle of Advil Liqui-Gels. I'd never tried these before, but I wanted something strong and quick-acting.
~ Description and Ingredients
Advil tells us that Advil Liqui-Gels are faster and stronger on tough pain than Extra Strength Tylenol. Advil Liqui-Gels are little capsules filled with a blue-green liquid pain reliever/fever reducer. Since it is already in liquid form within the capsule, it becomes absorbed into your system faster than ordinary capsules or tablets.
The active ingredient in each capsule is solubilized ibuprofen equal to 200 mg ibuprofen.
The adult dosage is one capsule every 4 to 6 hours. If the pain or fever does not respond to one capsule, 2 capsules may be used, but don't exceed 6 caps in 24 hours.
Advil Liqui-Gel caps are quite small, probably a little longer than 1/2 inch, and fairly narrow. They are very easy to swallow. Sometimes I have problems swallowing large tablets or large capsules. These babies go down smooth! And you only need one, instead of the usual two.
The inactive ingredients listed are FD&C green No. 3, gelatin, pharmaceutical ink, polyethylene glycol, potassium hydroxide, purified water, sorbitan, sorbital.
~ My Experience
Okay, so I buy my little stash of Advil-Liqui-Gels and get back in my car and rip open the box and the bottle. I bought the smallest bottle I could, because I'd never tried these before and didn't want a huge bottle and then find out they didn't agree with me. This little bottle of 20 capsules had the kind of cap where you line up the arrow and lift up on the cap. Oh, I hate these! I battled and battled and finally got the top off, somehow managing not to break a fingernail. I did manage to read the dosage and discover I only needed one, so down it went with a swig of water. Hurry, hurry, hurry, and start working - my head was throbbing, my face was swollen, help!!
I began the 40 minute drive home, and within about 15 minutes I could already feel the pain subsiding. By the time I got home I felt much, much better, the pain was basically all gone. Throughout the next several hours I had no stomach upset (but I rarely do with any pain reliever,) no ear ringing, or any side effects whatsoever. The pain stayed away for a solid 5 hours.
Since then I have used Advil Liqui-Gels for light to moderate headaches, and they take away the pain quickly and effectively. These have become my new pain reliever of choice.
From the box:
"Advil Liqui-Gels can be used to temporarily relieve minor aches and pains due to: Headache, the common cold, toothache, muscular aches, backache, minor pain of arthritis, menstrual cramps."
Be aware also of the caution: Ibuprofen may cause a severe allergic reaction. If you are pregnant or breast feeding consult a health professional before use.
There is a caution that this is not to be used by children under 12 unless directed by a doctor.
There is also an alcohol warning: If you consume 3 or more alcoholic drinks every day, ask your doctor before use.
~ Final Thoughts
Advil Liqui-Gels are a very effective and quick-acting pain reliever and fever reducer. I find them easy on my stomach, the caps are easy to swallow, and you only need one capsule. I've noticed no unpleasant side effects.
The new bottle I just purchased now features an easier to open cap, where you just squeeze the sides together and twist off. It's still pretty difficult for a child to open, though.
You can find Advil Liqui-Gels in bottles of 180 for $14.99, or 80 for $9.99, or 135 for $12.79 at www. drugstore.com. Or check your local pharmacy or drugstore.
