| mainframetopc's Full Review: Ahead Software Nero 5.5 Full Version for PC (NERO5... |
I am a confessed CD-Burner junkie.
I buy every new and faster burner that comes on the market and as a result, I get virtually every bundled burner software to try.
Nero came with one of my older (and slower) burners over a year ago. Up to then I was very happy with Easy CD Creator.
I immediately downloaded the latest version from the Nero web site and was not at all happy with the interface. In addition, I had memory problems that blew away the Nero program if I ran Winfile or went to My Computer and opened large files.
Over time I downloaded newer versions of Nero and used it as a backup whenever Easy CD Creator gave me a coaster from a bad burn. The original software was an OEM version with a serial number that allowed me to get working upgrades.
By the time I got version 5.5.9.1.7, I preferred Nero to the other burner programs and had gotten familiar with the interface and weird program flow. Unfortunately, some of the newer versions were so buggy that I had to reload the old version just to get back to a working burner program. The result was that I never got rid of an older version whenever I loaded a newer version..just in case.
The latest version is 5.5.10.15. This is a great solid version and has solved all the previous problems. The EXPRESS feature really works faultlessly and I have been successful in virtually every type of burn. I really don't like using the WIZARD and either run the basic interface or the EXPRESS feature.
I burn some really weird stuff and the following is an example, and some hints of what works with this program:
DATA CD's in Multisessions..works great..program keeps track and lets you update a R/W or an R CD to accumulate data. If you start to run out of room on a subsequent burn, Nero tells you that you should finalize and not leave the session open..great feature!
JPEG's to DATA CD's...play great on your DVD player. Note that your player must be Kodak compatible to read the JPEG's. *See note at end on burning Kodak compatible CD.
CD Copy...do NOT use "on-the-fly" unless you have a death wish. Always write to Hard Disk.
VIDEO CD..quick and never fails. Allows you to preview the video before writing.
AUDIO CD...Does MP3's with no problems and allows preview.
In addition, the Nero Wave Editor is a great added package and is similar to Cool Edit.
Remember...always save the older version just in case the next upgrade is a bummer. If you stick with this program you won't regret it.
* May 4, 2003...Burning Kodak Compatible CD...
1) Run Nero Express....do not use basic Nero as it will not burn the correct format (just another bug..ho-hum).
2) Select DATA
3) Select DATA DISC
4) Select ADD either individual JPEG's or folder/folders of JPEG's
5) Select FINISH
6) Select NEXT
Be sure and UNcheck "Multisession Disc" as some DVD players won't read CD's that are not FINALIZED.
Make sure the BURN SPEED shown matches the blank CD inserted (e.g. 16X-32X-40X..etc) as some cheaper burners report the wrong maximum speed to Nero. When in doubt, use slower speed.
7) Select BURN
The only failures I've had were with kHypermedia 4X R/W. All other brands of R's and R/W have worked fine on the DVD player and, oddly enough, the failed R/W's work OK when burned as video CD's.
This should give you a great way of saving and showing digital pictures using your DVD player.

(very clean update as of 07/20/03..no bugs found..yet)
08/28/03 Check out new UPGRADE version 6.0.0.11. Great interface, but have not seen enough to drop the 5.0 series. The 6.0 series required a purchase since it does not qualify as an update to the 5.0 series.
