| Nixita's Full Review: Alon's Bakery |
I wish I lived next door to Alon's. Alas, if I did, I would quickly become far too gargantuan to even waddle over there, so perhaps it's best that I save this delightful little bakery for special occasions.
Alon's serves traditional bakery fare: small salads (including fruit salad at breakfast - as though you could resist the pastry!), semi-gourmet sandwiches on homemade bread, loaves of bread, pies, cakes, tortes, cheesecakes, cookies, croissants, and other assorted pastries. They also serve excellent coffee and coffee-drinks (lattes, cappucinos, etc.). It's hard to recommend one of Alon's offerings over the others, for pastry taste is very subjective. Some will find their mouth watering at fruit tart, the jewel-toned fruits glistening with glaze; others will be drawn to the flaky chocolate croissants. Still others will relish a cranberry-orange scone or simply one of the long, crusty baguettes that enable you to feel delightfully European (at least until you get outside and must climb into a Lexus instead of onto a bicycle).
Browse for a while; bask in the warm, aromatic air; let yourself vacillate between anticipation and excruciating indecision. Then just start stabbing toward the glass case with your finger, repeating monotonously "...and one of those...and two of these...and one of that..."
Alon's also has a charming selection of coffee accessories - brightly painted cups and so on - which makes for handy browsing while you wait in line. Yup. You didn't think a place this good would be deserted (oww-bad pun!), did you? Weekdays see the usual rush-hour and lunch-hour crunches, and weekends the place is beseiged by VaHi folks and tourists alike. Still, it's a great place to stop when you're out yard-saling and need a bit of a break, or any time you want to indulge.
