| AliventiAsylum's Full Review: Alpo Prime Cuts Canned Dog Food |
Way back when I got my first dog, a Doberman, the breeder advised me to mix both dry food and canned food together with a little water to feed her. Thats what Ive been doing ever since. And for as long as I can remember, Alpo has been the brand of canned dog food I have given to all of my dogs.
Alpo Prime Cuts Canned Dog Food is their favorite. I like to give food thats sliced or in chunks as it seems to come out of the can easier and not be as messy when they are eating. With a dog as hairy as our Old English Sheepdog, messy food means a face that really shows it. I hate having to clean him up all the time after he eats.
Alpo Prime Cuts Canned Dog Food contains hunks of food in gravy. The food appears like hunks of meat. While there is plenty of it in the food, there are also meat by-products which act as fillers. There are no additional cereal fillers in the food, which is a good thing. For some people, having meat by-products is a turn-off as they wont feed meat by-products to their pets. As long as my dog is happy and can eat this, I am fine with giving it to him.
The other issue is that just because you are buying a certain flavor, that doesnt mean you are getting that meat. For example, the beef flavor ingredients list poultry as the second ingredient. Beef is fourth on the list.
I like that Alpo now makes all their canned dog food with pull tops. This makes it easy to open and scoop out. I also dont have to worry about getting the can opener dirty with the gravy. The food does have a strong scent to it that is typical of most dog foods and I really hate when that smell gets on the can opener. Ive smelled some foods that are a whole lot worse than this, but the smell is still present.
The cans are right about 13 ounces and our dogs get a can of that a day plus two cups of dry food mixed with water. We feed them once a day in the afternoon, although some mornings they seem to look for more to eat. They do gobble down the food really good, rarely leaving any behind. Having two dogs means that even when one gets a bit finicky, usually the other will finish off his food. This has the advantage of keeping them interested in food as the you snooze, you lose rules apply.
They both seem to like the chunky and sliced food over the ground food, and thats fine with me. Alpo Prime Cuts Canned Dog Food satisfies all of us. At a cost of $ 0.89 per can, it makes feeding my dos a positive experience for all of us.
