| jillrashel's Full Review: Alpo Prime Cuts Canned Dog Food |
I don’t know if anyone else out there has as picky of an eater as I do. My dog Balou, a red Siberian husky, will not eat dry dog food, he won’t eat most canned dog food, heck he doesn’t even eat the cat’s food. I have tried most everything to get him to eat and the only thing I know he won’t turn down is a Big Mac with no pickles…
Each time I go to the store to try something new (praying he’ll eat, he’s getting thin) I’ve tried Pedigree, Gravy Train, well…I don’t know all their names but I’ve tried them. Just last month I came across Alpo’s Prime Cuts. Like the others, I bought 4 cans as a test. When I got home I opened a can, put it in an actual bowl, heated it up in the microwave (he thinks it’s people food) then put it on his stand. HE ATE IT! I was excited, but then I realized, maybe he was just really hungry. So again the next day, but this time I didn’t heat it and you guessed it, he ate it. Later that afternoon I put the third can in his actual dog bowl and he even ate that. Two cans in one day…it was a miracle.
Before I could run out I went and bought five or six more cans. They are priced about even with the other dog food; at Wal-mart they were $.49, not bad if you ask me, still cheaper than a Big Mac and healthier too. My dog will only eat the amount in a small 13 oz. can, some dogs (and people) would prefer the larger size cans, and unfortunately I haven’t seen them for this particular brand.
As days went on I noticed him to be a little more active, not as sleepy and still chomping away. I generally give him a can in the morning, a can in the afternoon, and if he seems to want another then a can at suppertime. What ever he doesn’t eat I just wrap up and put in the fridge. The recommendation is that I feed my dog between 4-6 cans a day, but he won’t eat that much.
A bonus to this dog food, it doesn’t smell like normal canned dog food. It doesn’t have a nice aroma either, but it isn’t that gagging, nasty smell. I have noticed a difference in his body also; I think he has finally put on a few pounds to fill out into an adult. The Vet will be proud.
Here’s a little about the food itself:
