The standout feature of the Altec-Lansing ACS48 system is the two-way satellite speaker design. This is the main reason to buy these speakers over most other $100.00 speakers sets. The speakers feature a separate tweeter and midrange driver in the satellite, as opposed to the standard single-cone design of other systems at this price. The high frequency reproduction is far sharper and more accurate from these speakers than from the usual single-driver satellite.
The amplification provided is also quite good, with the speakers getting 20W and the sub getting 40W, a quite decent power rating for speakers this inexpensive. Aside from these particulars, the Altec-Lansing ACS48 system is the usual analog two-satellite & subwoofer combination, similar to many systems on sale today. The design is simple and clean, with no attempt to stand out visually
The controls are very simple, with merely a pair of electronic buttons on the top of one satellite that control the power and the system volume. The subwoofer unit has a volume control as well, for matching the bass level to the room. Other than that, there are no controls. There is NO headphone output jack available, so you're out of luck if you want to easily switch to headphones. There are two input jacks on the subwoofer unit, so that you can mix in a CD player along with the computer, in case you want music playing while you're using your cd-rom drive.
If you're unhappy with the sound from the standard computer speakers, these are a great choice for an inexpensive improvement. If you're looking for digital sound control or USB sound, these aren't for you.
