Altec Lansing manufacturers sound systems, headsets, headphones, microphones and personal digital media. Their company motto is, Our Sound Artisans blend design and sound engineering to thrill your senses and stir your soul. With a motto like that, Im sure there wont be a problem putting a one of their headsets to the test.
Earphones and Headsets are to music listeners what helmets are to football players, crucial audio ear candy. Although the Altec Lansing AHS30 Gaming Headset w/ Mic is not the number one headphone for sound, Altec makes a decent multimedia stereo headset and microphone that is better than the generic headphone that came with my GPX personal stereo and a better microphone than the ones I used at the Crisis Call Center.
The Altec Lansing AHS30 headset is ideal for PC or Mac interactive audio users and can be used with other portable gadgets such personal stereos, video game systems and MP3 players. Lansing specifically designed this headset for gamers but I use mine for all sorts of things. For those that are computer savvy, you can use the microphone to add voice annotations to documents, or dictate using speech recognition software. Although I don't use it much, the recording quality is adequate for my PC voice applications.
The Altec Lansing AHS30 microphone arm is also adjustable for easy positioning so the mic does not slap you in the mouth. Although the microphone has 3 settings (mute, low, high) for volume control this is a feature I dont use much. I have had no problem with sound and noise canceling, the microphone works well without the echo heard in some of the cheaper headsets.
The Altec Lansing AHS30 is lightweight, unobtrusive headset that feels almost weightless when worn. The headset also has a centrally located plastic bubble like volume control piece, which allows you to adjust the volume despite the setting of your PC. Although I can't walk to the Refrigerator while wearing them, the cord is long enough for me to be comfortable and mobile at my desk.
One of the features I especially like is the split double headband, which easily adjusts for fairly good comfort and fit. Ive always had a habit of readjusting my headphones since there are usually a thousand things going on when Im on the computer. Plus, it always erks me to wear a headset that does not fit properly.
The sturdy futuristic looking leatherette ear pads are smooth and moderately comfortable when worn. They are sturdy and won't slip off your ears. The only draw back is when moisture builds after longtime wear which is normal. The good thing is that after they have been broken in, they become more comfortable for the ears and head.
The Altec Lansing AHS30 is a moderately stylish headset especially with its 3.5mm Gold-plated monaural mini-plug and a 3.5mm Gold-plated mini-plug for the microphone with 2.4M shielded cord. These mini-plugs work well with my PC and also with my portable devices.
The headset frequency response is 60 Hz - 20,000 Hz, which is adequate for my needs. Im not an expert on the frequency responses but I know the response range is used primarily to weed out the cheap headphones. I did not want to dish on another headset, but for comparison purpose you can look at the PlantronicS Audio 40 headset, although its a decent headset, you get 20 Hz - 20,000 Hz in frequency response plus you are going to shell out almost $10.00 more.
The headset also work well when I turn my computer into a telephone with no echo loop. The only time I experience some lag in transmission is if Im using my home modem rather than a high-speed connection, but this cant be blamed on the headsets.
If you need additional information or specifications about these headphones visit www.altecmm.com, the site offers great close up shots. The Altec Lansing AHS30 represent Altecs top of the line headset.
Specifications:
· Microphone Sensitivity: -39dB V/Pascal 2dB
· Microphone Power Source Voltage: 5V DC
· Microphone Frequency Response: 100Hz - 16kHz
Bottom line: If you are looking for an inexpensive, durable home or office headset, then look no further; the Altec Lansing AHS30 is for you. I put them through the test and they have passed with a B, since they work well and continue to thrill my ear lobs.
