| Bornio's Full Review: Altec Lansing ACS 54 4 Speakers |
This set of speakers typically costs around $80. I bought mine for around $55 at buy.com, which offers huge discounts on all speakers, so go there first. The size of the satellite speakers is of course a plus; they're small, unobtrusive, and magnetically shielded. The addition of a volume control for the surround speakers is a great feature and is conveniently located. The power button is behind the primary satellite and is not in an optimal position, but that's not a big deal. The first time I tried out the speakers, they sounded kind of weak because I was using them with an integrated sound card. If you want full and acceptable potential out of these speakers, you'll have to plug them into a separately powered card, preferably a Sound Blaster Live!. I have mine plugged into a SB Live! Value, and the sound is loud and clear. Make sure your sound card has TWO output speaker plugs, one for main sound and one for periphery/surround sound, otherwise, you won't be able to use the surround speakers. The bass is alright, not incredibly powerful, but good enough for gaming, music purposes. If you play Counter-Strike, these surround sound speakers are an added perk as you can detect the direction of other players near you. These speakers do have that bit of hum, or noise, if you turn up the volume very loud and play a quiet song, but it's unnoticeable if you play sound at decent levels. Don't let that be a big factor in your decision to buy these speakers though, because you'll be hard pressed to find another set that matches this system in terms of quality and price.
