Textbooks, like STM publishing, are a totally different animal, one I neglected to address. In my review I really only looked at the issue from the perspective of fiction.

These other areas are much more amenable to electronic formats--witness the mass exodus of academic journals from print to electronic.

But I'm no more convinced Kindle-type readers are the natural home for such things than they are for fiction. As you say, students already have laptops they can use for textbooks, so the Kindle is still an additional device. Moreover, laptops allow for much more functionality than a reader. And as textbooks become more electronic they are taking advantage of this functionality--becoming more interactive, allowing students to integrate the text with word processors and spreadsheets. Textbooks are becoming working documents. Things a Kindle just can't do.

Thanks for the comment.

What about the college campus?

I spent hundreds of dollars every semester on the heavy textbooks. Only having to carry one ebook reader from building to building may have been worth the hassle of the technology pains. Of course, a laptop would be competition since they are common on campuses now.

Not until Bezos becomes less greedy (Reply to this comment)

I shall be happy to buy an e reader when the price drops to a more reasonabl level, $400 is ridiculous, and Bezos stops trying to limit readers to Amazon's content. There are thousands of free ebooks online, notably Project Gutenberg, but Bezos is greedy and limits the Kindle to books that you have to purchase on Amazon. The first open reader that comes out will eat Kindle's lunch

"NowNow", let's get serious! (Reply to this comment)

Thanks for opening my eyes to the current status of ebook readers. A work in progress, perhaps. Or perhaps not.

Anyway, tell me they don't really call the service, "Ask Kindle NowNow". Someone's just GOTTA come up with a better name!
