froggie3ds's Full Review: Ameda Purely Yours Dual Electric Breastpump
I have been using this pump for almost 9 months & have had no problems with it. I purchased it in November of 2002; I started pumping in January of 2003 to build up my supply in anticipation of returning to work. I should add that some of the reviews here are a few years old. Currently (fall of 2003) you can get this pump as a basic model for around $165 including shipping, or a full featured model (including carrying bag, bottles etc) for $200 including shipping & I believe the current warranty is for a year from the date of purchase.
Many people feel that the price is high compared to other pumps, but you need to be aware that most of the "cheaper" pumps available don't work as efficiently, can be painful or are single pumps. This pump can be used for dual pumping or can be easily switched for single pumping. Overall the cost is significantly less expensive than formula feeding. Compared to other pumps in this class it's a bargain.
I spoke to several people online who have used both the Medela PIS & this one. They all said the 2 pumps were comparable. This one was more reasonably priced so I chose it over the Medela & have never regretted it.
I admit, I only work on weekends, so I only pump part-time, but this pump is portable, efficient and offers 3 different power sources (a/c, 6 AA batteries or car power cord which is an accessory purchased separately). Yes it makes a little bit of noise. Things with motors tend to make noise. If you leave the pump in a bag or case while it's on it will muffle the noise a bit.
Other reviewers have complained about the delicate white valves. I don't know why they've had problems with the valves unless they tried to wash them with a nipple brush-which is unnecessary & would damage them. You can either soak them for a short time (like for the few minutes it takes to wash the rest of the pump parts) in some soapy water & then rinse, or you can take a soapy sponge & squeeze it, allowing the soapy water to run over the valve, & then rinse off the soap. The pump parts are very easy to clean. The pump is very small & lightweight so you could really use any old backpack or tote bag to transport it. It's less expensive when purchased without the carrying case too. I'd recommend purchasing it without and buying any bag that suits your personal style.
I cannot fathom why this pump is not more readily available locally. You can find the Medela anywhere, but Ameda is mainly available online. There are however some fantastic online retailers that carry this pump. My sister in law has since purchased this pump on my recommendation & is thoroughly pleased with it.
Edited in May 2007 to add: I cannot believe I forgot to mention these points when I originally posted this review. This pump has variable speed and suction, just as Medela pumps have. In addition, the pump body is universally threaded, which means you can use many other brand bottles with it. The least expensive ones are plastic and made by Evenflo, they come in a pack of 4 and are widely available. You cannot use Avent bottles without a conversion kit which I have seen online and costs around $10-$12. (Your other option would be to pump into Ameda or other bottles and then transfer the milk into your Avent bottles.)
I believe you can pump directly into breastmilk freezer bags, however I always pumped into bottles and then transferred to bags when I used them.
My son is now 4 1/2 and I stopped nursing long ago. But I still think this pump is a fantastic value and I highly recommend it over Medela because of price. Ameda is also the only brand that offers a closed milk system, which means milk cannot back up into the pump. So to some degree, I always felt that it was more hygienic than the Medela. I used it for over a year with no problems whatsoever.
I purchased it from www.lactationconnection.com and their pricing is still fantastic. As of May 2007 their price for the basic pump w/2 bottles and an a/c adapter (without a carrying bag) is $149 including shipping. They also carry all Ameda accessories available.
