Freak369's Full Review: Antigua Pittsburgh Penguins Ladies Hoody Sweatshir...
The Pittsburgh Penguins have seen their share of ups and downs the past few seasons. I was tickled pink when I got my official Miroslav Satan game jersey and was all smiles when a Sidney Crosby away jersey mysteriously made its way to my doorstep but when I was given a Pens plush hoody, well, that's when I knew I was officially a hockey fanatic. Sadly that wonderful 3X oversized but oh-so-comfy hoody was stolen. Rest assured, if I ever see anyone at a Pens game wearing it, there will be a rumble that no ref will be able to break up.
So how can it be a hoody and a sweatshirt? Simple, the terms have become pretty generic these days and as long as there is a hood attached to something, technically it can qualify to be called a "hoody". I like the deep bucket design of the hood, I can pull it up over my head even if I am wearing a baseball hat and it doesn't feel like it is pulling on the material on the back of the sweatshirt. That's pretty important if you are layering this under a coat or jacket. With the recent drop in temperature this has been on me almost 24 hours a day and its doing a great job of keeping me warm without making me break out in a sweat.
This has been washed at least 30 times and still looks great; initially I was worried about the embroidered parts losing their color but that hasn't happened. It has the current Pittsburgh Penguin logo on the chest along with the name. It's hard to miss the logo and name so its the perfect gift item for someone that is a Pens fan or likes to wear team clothing. The inside is soft and you get a good bit of heat retention but on the super cold days you'll want to use this as a layered item because it isn't thick enough to keep you warm in the winter months.
One thing that I really like about this zip up sweatshirt is that the pockets have high stitching on the sides; that means you can put things in them without them falling out straight away. Oh you will have things pop out but not as easily as with standard pockets. Pilling can happen if you aren't careful and unless you have a pill shaver you might be in for some extra work when this comes out of the washer or dryer. Since I am paranoid about it shrinking I toss it in the dryer for a few minutes then line dry it. So far the elastic on the waist and wrists has held up nicely and the zipper seam hasn't started buckling or getting wavy.
I had the choice between getting the zipper version or the pull-over sweatshirt, I went with the zipper version since I have five or six penguin pullover sweatshirts and wanted something that I could get in and out of easier than a pull-over. Now that I'm temporarily stuck in a wheelchair I'm glad that I have this one because it is easier to get on an off than a pull-over. The downside is that the zipper can get stuck on loose clothing that you might have on under the sweatshirt. While it is warm and nice to wear on colder days it isn't enough for winter weather, you will need a jacket or something else over this because it just isn't thick enough to keep you warm when the temperature drops below forty degrees.
Most of the top shelf sweatshirts sell for over fifty dollars; that might sound like a lot to pay for a sweatshirt but when you stop and think about the amount of use you will get from it, it works out in the end. I got this for $47.00 from a local Pittsburgh Penguin sport store but they do sell for more online and at NHL.com. I don't regret getting the zipper version since it worked out well for me and my current situation but when the sweatshirts go on sale after the hockey season I do plan on getting the pull-over version.
I've only seen this version in black in sizes from medium to extra large but there are a ton of different Penguin sweatshirts available. This is an authentic and sanctioned item so you are paying more for it than you would if you hit a street vendor in the Strip District; mine came with three tags, one of which had the NHL hologram logo on it. If you have a Pens fan in your midst this does make for a great gift and it will retain its color and shape after many, many washings.
