Carol Prisant - Antiques Roadshow Collectibles: The Complete Guide to Collecting 20th Century Toys, Glassware, Costume Jewelry, Memorabilia, Ceramics & More from the Most-Watched Series on Pbs
Cons: Most pictures are in black and white. Very little price guidelines. High-end collectibles.
The Bottom Line: An excellent beginners guide to identifying furniture and hallmarks, but not much help in other areas. Looks down it's spine at us "common" collectors.

If you are a lover of the old, the rare or the odd, then no doubt you have seen at least one PBS broadcast of Antiques Roadshow . Hosted in a different city each week, Antiques Roadshow is where the average joe takes that old painting from the attic to find out its true value from the "experts".
The Antiques Roadshow Primer developed from the series as a novice's guide to antiques and collectibles.
The book is divided into 10 chapters:
Furniture
Silver
Porcelain, Pottery and Glass
Paintings
Jewelry
Clocks and Watches
Metalwork
Rugs, Quilts, and Samples
Toys, Dolls and Collectibles
Books and Manuscripts
Each chapter is then sub-divided into categories such as "Is it old?" "Is it Valuable?" or one of my favorites "Is it Real?". Each section also contains many pictures and illustrations though almost exclusively done in black and white. (Note: there is a full color section in the middle of the book but not enough to satisfy.) Throughout are blue side boxes with tips and historical tidbids.
The back of the book contains a glossary and a list of suggested reading. The glossary is only 3 pages, but very helpful.
Touted as The introductory guide to antiques and collectibles, I was disappointed in the book overall. I felt it dealt more with "high-end" items vs. common collectibles. As a collector of antique watches and vintage costume jewelry, I thought many of the comments in these sections were disparaging.
If you are interested in determining a style of furniture or identifying a silver hallmark, this book is excellent. If you want to know what Great-grandpa's pocketwatch or Daddy's stamp collection are worth, look elsewhere. Don't even ask about that dirty ol' Barbie. Save the $19.95 and look individual items up at the library
