Pros: Price at the time.
Cons: Terrible skipping, built in speakers are terrible, fails to read DVD's when hot.
The Bottom Line: Research heavily and avoid buying this unit. It's not a very reliable product to say the least. It does make a nice monitor though.

| monkboon's Full Review: Apex Digital PD-100 5.8 in. Portable DVD Player |
Well, I initially purchased this unit because I was going on a 6 month deployment (USS Nimitz)and I own around 300 or so DVD's. At the time, I didn't own a laptop so I figured a portable DVD player was the way to go, especially with space being as issue.
I purchased my player for the then cheap price of $299.99 (all the others we're going for $450.00 and up at the time). Compared to others, it was a bit on the bulky side but all I was concerned about was being able to was my DVD's in the comfort of my rack with a pair of Bose headphones.
I must say that initially the unit worked fine the first month and a half. battery life wasn't a major concern because I kept it plugged most of the time. It had most of the DVD player features we've come to know. I also never had any problems with the remote.
My issue is that after the 1st month of so, I noticed more and more problems with the unit reading DVD's. I cleaned the lens on the regular. I began to notice that it would get hotter than normal and even though we we're in a air conditioned space, it still ran a bit hot and wouldn't read new or old DVD's.
When it would read, it would start skipping badly within the first 15 minutes. I would clean the unit and the DVD, to no avail. To make a lone story short, it became a tabletop monitor for my PS2 and XBOX, in which I also had to view my DVD's on because the APEX stopped playing them. I bought the unit to watch DVD's in the privacy of my rack with headphones, but in the end it became a necessary accessory that enabled me to watch DVD's period!
