I bought my iPod as soon as the original 20G version came out. I have an iMac at home, but aslo have a PC. After learning the lessons on downloading via USB from my husband's 20G Nomad JukeBox, I knew the iPod was what I wanted.
Price: expensive. But overall, you get an excellent value.
Sound: very good. I would immediately ditch the headphones that come with it, but keep the remote. If you fly often, as I do, this thing works great with Bose noise canceling headsets. Otherwise, get a good pair of headphones that you have had a good experience with. they should work well with the iPod.
Ease of use: The scroll wheel is a no-brainer. I have the iPod who's wheel doesn't actually move. Nothing to break there. It is intuitive to use. The software installation for the computer was simple too.
Firewire: Speed, baby! I downloaded 9G of music in about 10 minutes! It took my husband 6 HOURS on a USB connection on his PC.
Installation: easy on the iMac, unknown on the PC
Case: Immediately throw away the one that comes with the iPod, but make sure you buy a good one at the same time as you buy the iPod. I bought the FM transmitter kit (can't remember the name of it, but it is sold in the same square looking box as the iPod) and the case that came with it was much better. The iPod scratched easily, so unless you don't care about looks, keep it in a case!
The iPod is the best thing I have bought from Apple. At the rate I'm going, I will have to upgrade to the 30G iPod soon. My husband is drooling in anticipation of getting my 20G iPod....
