The Atkins line of snack products are rather interesting; there are the crunchy salty snacks that take the place of potato chips and the sweets that can help keep you from completely derailing from a low carb diet. Id tried the Atkins Endulge Vanilla Creme Wafer Crisp a while ago and really liked the taste of it, the problem was that I liked the taste of it too much. I couldnt buy a box of these and have them sitting in the cabinet because Id go through three or four of them at a time which sort of defeats the purpose. When I saw these at GNC for .50 a bar I couldnt pass them up but I handed the bag to my son and told him to hide them from me and only give me one at a time. Even though they only have 4 grams of impact carbs, having several of these at a time could throw me out of ketosis so I have to be careful with them. Most of the time I toss them in the freezer so I have to really work at eating them and let me say, they taste so good when they are completely frozen.
Atkins Endulge Vanilla Creme Wafer Crisp
If you have ever had a Kit Kat bar and loved the combination of the crunchy wafer center with the chocolate coating then chances are you will fall in love with Atkins Endulge Vanilla Creme Wafer Crisp. This doesnt have a fake chocolate taste and part of that is due to the formulation that relies heavily on the sugar alcohols. Some low carb or no carb bars can leave you with a nasty after taste or some type of reflux but Ive never experienced that this with flavor. Each pouch is one ounce and there are two bars per package. When you bite into it there is a nice crunch to it and theres a thin layer of chocolate between the wafers. The first time I tried these I was convinced that someone was playing a joke on me - that there was no way that this could taste so good and still have only four grams of impact carbs. When I am heavy into ketosis I only have one of the bars and save the other one for the next day - that is a hard thing to do when these things taste so freakin good! Since they have such a good taste you get that fulfillment type of feeling from having one of these without the guilt that comes afterward when you snap and grab a regular candy bar.
To me these are a little more filling than the other products in the Endulge line, theres a nice bit of crunch to them so you actually feel like you are eating something rather than having something melt in your mouth like the peanut butter cups. These arent going to fill you up and you shouldnt reply on them as a meal replacement, theres not enough in them to hold you over in place of a complete meal and if you try to use these instead of a meal you are setting yourself up for a disaster. Since this contains sugar alcohols some people may experience some side effects from it, mainly looser bowel movements. Atkins recently started adding a small line of text about this stating, Those sensitive to sugar alcohols and their laxative effects should limit these to one to two servings per day. On a side note, this is sweetened with Splenda so if you have trouble with this product, chances are you should skip having these bars or look for the ones that arent sweetened with it.

Price
When you buy these individually you can expect to pay about $1.49 for them at places like GNC. Target and Wal-Mart sell them for about $1.29 but I got these for .50 cents each at my local GNC because they are due to expire November 4, 2005. If you are going to buy these by the box make sure that you check the expiration date to make sure that you will be able to make your way through the box in time but its been my experience that these are still good even after the date has come and gone. Are they worth it? If you are concerned with carbohydrates then they are - especially if you are someone who is prone to have snack attacks or craves chocolate.
The Bottom Line
When I saw these for .50 cents a bar I couldnt pass them up. they have such an incredible taste that if you handed one of these to someone and didnt tell them that it was an Atkins product they would never know the difference. Even though Atkins is having some trouble financially and their products arent flying off the shelves like they used to - that is a good thing for consumers. The prices are starting to drop now the stores are finding themselves with a huge overstock of Atkins products. Remember to check the dates on products especially if they see them on sale for less than half the usual price. Since you can toss these in the freezer or the refrigerator to extend their life - you can buy a ton of these when they go on sale. These arent something that you can live on because they arent meal replacement bars nor are they something that you can have four or five of at a time - they are for a snack when you are trying to fight off the munchies or as a nice reward after youve stuck to a strict diet for a few weeks.
