| Freak369's Full Review: Aveeno Anti-Itch Cream with Natural Colloidal Oatm... |
After a bad run with Purex laundry detergent about two years ago, Aveeno Anti-Itch Cream has been a staple in my house. It works on anything from minor itches and irritations to bug bites and the starting signs of a topical allergic reaction. Normally you can get away with a hydrocortisone cream or spray but that usually treats the cause of the rash or allergy but does little for the itching, redness and discomfort that often accompany it. This is a product that I just wont skimp on or substitute regardless of price. When the itchies strike, this is the first thing I reach for to get some relief! During the summer I never leave the house without a tube of this. Apparently I have some invisible sign that says flesh buffet to mosquitoes, bees and fire ants because I get attacked as soon as I step outside when the summer heat is in high gear.
Aveeno Anti-Itch Cream
Dont let the small one ounce tube fool you, this is some powerful stuff! The first thing you need to know about this product is that is for external use only so if you are suffering from a yeast infection or have anal irritation you should pick up another medication designed for your specific needs. Straight out of the tube the cream has a slight pink color to it and a slight mint smell to it and I sort of think that this is the camphor thats giving off the smell but even so its not the least bit offensive or overpowering. When you apply it you can rub it completely in or leave a thin layer on your skin to get quicker relief. Its not greasy or slimy and once you rub it in, you cant tell that youve applied a cream. When I use this on my hands I do get a slight tingling sensation but this is probably due to the sensitivity level of my hands, chances are you wont feel this but if you do, its nothing to get alarmed about.
Most of the time I get an almost immediate relief from bug bites and irritations but with larger areas or huge break outs a few minutes are needed to get relief. To get the most from this product you should apply it to clean dry skin, clean any effected area to be treated with cool [not cold] water and a mild soap. These are only my suggestions so please read the instruction on the tube before you use this on yourself or someone else. A small amount is usually best when first using this product, it sort of globs [for lack of a better term] out of the tube so dont go crazy squeezing it or you will end up with a mess. You can rub this in with your bare hands or use a paper towel however if you are a contact lens wearer you should make sure to wash your hands well after using this before you attempt to put in or remove your lenses since the camphor will sting your eyes.
When my son had a severe reaction to a laundry detergent I used a hydrocortisone cream to treat it but it was a little messy and didnt do much for the itch. While he never complained about it I knew that it bothered him and he resisted the urge to scratch the best he could. After the initial ordeal someone suggested this product to treat the itching portion of the allergic reaction and Im glad that they did. This isnt going to get rid of the problem but it will help reduce the irritation and provide some relief. If you have ever had a rash or bug bite you know the first rule is to never scratch it so using a product like this will help speed up the healing process by reducing the surface irritation. If you have an open would or something that is excessively weeping [moisture or liquid coming from a wound] you should consult your physician first to see if there is a stronger cream or medication for your needs.
Things To Know
If you are experiencing a rash of unknown origins, skip the soap and rinse the area with cool water then pat dry and apply the cream. If you dont notice any change within an hour or so or the rash seems to be spreading you should seek medical attention or contact your physician for further advice about treatment. The same advice goes for those who may start to experience shortness or breath or trouble breathing, seek medical attention as soon as possible. Allergic reactions can happen at any time even if you have used a product for years, you can develop a allergy to it. While this is most definitely a great product to have on hand for day to day itches, rashes, bites and contact with topically poisonous plants it isnt something that you should use for an extended period of time. If you notice that you are breaking out more and more often you should get a referral to an allergist to see if there is a root problem that needs to be addressed.
If you are applying this to a small child [over the age of two] make sure that they know not to scratch the area or touch it. All it takes is a small amount to get in their eye and theyll be screaming bloody murder. If you notice that your child has chronic itching or small bites of an unknown origin you may want to check their scalp to see if they have head lice or another parasite. Weve been blessed so far in regards to avoiding the head lice epidemic but I still check them on a regular basis when they start complaining about the itchies.
The Bottom Line
As I stated, this is something that I always make sure is on hand. With four boys, my brother and tons of house guests and daily visitors it is the first thing I reach for when someone starts complaining about a bite, rash or itch. This is recommended for children ages two and older, can be used up to four times a day and acts not only as a topical itch relief product but as a skin protectant and moisturizer as well. If you have any questions about this product or would like further information, you can contact Johnson & Johnson at their toll free customer service line [800-526-3967]. If you experience dry skin and itching that can accompany it, suffer from bug bites or are looking for relief from poison oak, sumac or ivy I highly recommend checking out Aveeno Anti-Itch Cream!
As always, thanks for the read!
