| dlstewart's Full Review: Avery Durable Slant Ring Binder 2" Capacity Black |
Our office uses a variety of 3-ring binders. Today I was doing some internal company research and found myself browsing through a black Avery Durable Slant Ring Binder with a 2" Capacity.
Description
This black binder measures 11 1/2" high x 11 1/4" wide. It is constructed from a smooth black vinyl over an inner board. The spine measures 3" wide and has a clear plastic pocket on the outside of the spine where a label can fit. The spine pocket measures 3 3/4" high x 2 1/4" wide.
Inside the binder are two pockets: one on the inside front cover, and on one back inside cover. A triangular piece of sturdy plastic fits on the two outer most rings and serves as a protector against the paper sheets becoming caught in the curved bottom of the slant rings.
The silver ring section is attached to the inside spine of the binder with two rivets, which are colored black on the outside binder back to blend in with the black vinyl cover. The ring section is a silver color with two trigger-tabs on each end, that when pressed, open all three rings of the binder. The rings are not round like a traditional notebook. The left side of the ring is rounded while the right side of the ring is straight and on a slant. The manufacturer says that a slant ring binder holds up to 25% more than a round-ring binder.
The Reason We Chose This Binder
Our company produces a lot of 4-page product instruction manuals. At some point, a coworker came up with the idea of photocopying the manuals and inserting them into a binder. The first page of each manual would have a tab attached to it, identifying the manual by a code number. There would also be indexes in the book, dividing the manuals by product category.
This Avery Slant Ring Binder is designed to improve tab visibility. The pages also lay flat against the back cover to reduce stress against the ring holes so that the pages dont rip as easily. This binder sounded like a perfect solution for our needs!
Our Experiences
This particular Avery Durable Slant Ring Binder has been in use for four years. Im surprised at how little wear this binder is showing. There are no rips or gouges in the vinyl covers or along the spine creases where the covers bend to open and close. The smooth black vinyl is definitely showing scuff marks, though.
We have placed seven pages (8 1/2" x 11) of charts and forms in the inside front pocket. You can see where the pages are bulged out a bit. When the papers are removed from the pocket, a faint vertical line shows on the plastic, outlining where the papers were kept.
Someone chose 3-hole indexes with clear plastic tabs. These indexes are composed of a very stiff paper that forms a pocket on one side of the divider. These indexes do not like to turn in this notebook. The paper that forms the pocket is too stiff to flip easily over the rings.
We photocopied the instruction manuals so that two manual pages are on one sheet of 20-pound copier paper. We used an electric 3-hole punch to place holes in the pages. Then we created small tabs for each set of instructions and labeled each tab with the code number relating to that manual. All the tabs are very easy to view in this binder.
The 8 1/2" x 11" manual pages are easy to flip back and forth in the binder. As I mentioned earlier, the stiff indexes make page turning more difficult. There is also one clear plastic sheet protector in this notebook that is easy to flip back and forth along the rings.
The office really likes that the pages in this binder lay flat when the book is open. Sometimes we need to make notes on the pages inside this binder. Since the pages are flat, and the notebook rings are slanted, it makes writing on the pages easy.
Its easy to open these notebook rings, too. There are trigger-tabs at the top and bottom of the ring unit. By pressing my thumb on the inside of these trigger-tabs, pressure is applied that snaps open all three of the rings. I tried to open the rings without using the trigger-tabs, and it was much more difficult. Anyone with hand problems would have found prying apart the rings a bit of a challenge.
We have placed 263 pages in this binder. There is plenty of room to add more pages, too, since these 263 pages are only half way up the slanted ring. (The manufacturer says that this binder has a capacity of 480 sheets.)
Purchasing
We purchased this binder at Staples four years ago for around $6.00. Staples sells this binder today for $6.49.
Summary
Our office is very happy using this Avery Durable Slant Ring Binder. It has taken four years of use very well, and I expect it will easily last several more. The rings still form a tight mesh, and the papers are easy to move and view in this notebook. At some point though, I will change the stiff paper indexes to a set that turn easier in the binder. This Avery slant ring binder was the perfect choice for this project, which required so many tabs to be easily viewed.
I hope you have found this review useful.
