Pros: Inexpensive compared to other mineral foundations, soft matte finish
Cons: I have problems with application being cakey, can be messy.
The Bottom Line: Good product, inexpensive, if your interested in trying mineral makeup good place to start, however for me better as a finishing powder than a foundation.
countrygyrl's Full Review: Avon Ideal Shade SMOOTH MINERAL FOUNDATION NATURAL...
I am always trying new beauty products and have been curious about mineral foundatons but have not wanted to spend the prices to try the so called "miracle" mineral foundatons many companies have offered.
Avon offers their mineral foundation for $11.00 but many times it goes on sale for around $7 buy one get one half off or even a B.O.G.O. so then its really worth it. You can purchase from a Avon rep who can also give you samples or buy online from Avon.com. Avon.com also has a full ingreident listing, photos, reviews and decent color swatches. Avon also now offers a mineral makeup set with 2 foundations a finishing mineral powder and a blush for $25.00. They also have the shade selections catagorized in groups ie. "light" , "medium" and "dark" to help selecting a shade even eaiser. I purchased "nude" which is a good match for my light skin tone.
Avons mineral foundation comes in a small plastic "pot" with a black twist of lid. Inside is a sifter top covered with plastic to prevent the foundation from getting everywhere. The plastic can be difficult to get off. I have the older "pot" which is tiny, prehaps an inch and a half across and an inch deep, Avon has since updated it to make it wider and easier to get a brush into. Also the new pots have silver writing on the lid- the old were blank.
The foundation itself is a loose powder which is best applied with a Kabuki (Avon recommends theirs which is $4.99 and decent) or large blush/face brush. You are supposed to shake some foundation into the sifter portion of the pot, swirl the brush around and tap off the excess then apply to your face in a circular motion.
It can be messy- the powder is fine but not very different from any other loose face powder you may have ever used however being a foundation you get more coverage than just a regular loose powder. The powder can get everywhere especially if you are in a hurry.
I have found for me (I have very oily skin) this is better as a finishing powder than an actual foundation. For me, when applied as a foundation with a kabuki brush on bare skin the way Avon teaches you to, I get uneven coverage- cakey in some places. If I apply it over a primer I get heavy cakey coverage and the foundation darkens. However, the finish is nice and it feels light even if it is caked on and gives a matte but not flat finish. If I use this over my regular liquid foundation and pressed powder, as a "finish" , applied lightly with a large face brush it is beautiful. It gives me a smooth, soft beautiful airbrushed looked and helps keep me shine free longer than if I just used my regular pressed powder. If I try to use this over a liquid foundation as a powder by itself I get a cakey mess that darkens a shade. It does last all day though with no fading or oxidation.
I may just not have the technique correct for application of this type of foundation- I have only ever used a liquid foundation and a pressed powder.
I have read many favorable reviews on this foundation and Paula B. the "cosmetic cop" gives it a favorable rating for oily skin since this is kaolin based and very oil absorbent. I would say if you are interested in experimenting with mineral makeup this is a fantastic place to start. It does feel light, has a nice fine texture and gives a soft matte finish and no scent. If you have drier skin you will need to use a moisturize and let it fully absorb before using this.
