"The only problem I’ve encountered with the speakers is the volume knob. After four years of use, the knob started to develop dead spots. Now there are total dead spots and spots where just one of the speakers will cut out. This wasn’t a problem until recently, as it’s gotten worse. I think this is a fairly common problem with Labtec speakers because it’s happened in the previous 2 sets I’ve owned."

This is a common problem amongst all computer speakers with volume knobs, eventually. The problem is the volume pot (potentiometers) that the knob is connected to. If you can disassemble the speaker, you may be able to clean out the pot and correct the problem. Most of the time with cheap computer speakers, by the time the problem gets as bad as yours is, its time to get new speakers.
