I purchased the Baby Bjorn Bib in red for my son at around 12 months of age. I think it was around $6.99- $7.99 at Babies-r-Us. I chose the red because I felt the white or yellow might show tomato sauce stain. It also comes in blue.
What we were using before:
Those cheap laminated or plastic bibs with the pockets. They were really great until they made it into the wash a bunch of times and began falling apart. Not to mention the pockets doesn't stay open to catch everything. We had also tried the Pampers disposable bibs, but my son learned how to pull those off at an early age.
Pros:
It's made of molded plastic. (Much softer and more flexible than the generic bib of this nature.) This means the pocket will never collaspe or fold in. Fantastic! It catches all the food that escapes my son's mouth...especially now that he's learning to use a fork and spoon. After meals, you can just rinse it out or wash it with soapy water and kitchen brush. After diner, if the dishwasher is full, we throw our Baby Bjorn Bib in the top rack and let the dishwasher take care of it. It has yet to melt or change shape from the heat and we've been using it for around 5 months now. The neck of the bib is adjustable to fit around bigger or smaller kids' necks. Also, my son has not been able to figure out how to pull this on off and throw it...Thank goodness!
Cons:
If you have a really tall highchair tray or a very short child, the pocket of the bib may not sit right on the child. (The tray might be taller than the pocket and that defeats the entire purpose of the pocket catching all the falling food.) The price - some people might think that $6.99 - $7.99 is a ridiculous price to pay for a bib. (But when it is used at every meal, every day, for 7 month plus, to me it seemed very worth it.
Overall, my family has been extremely satisfied with this purchase. It has cut down on laundry for me and my son has never seemed to mind wearing it. Way to go Baby Bjorn for such a nice product!
3-30-05 Update: This bib is still going strong! I just purchased two more, one for my second child and another for my first. Although his first Baby Bjorn bib still works fine, after going in the dishwasher EVERY night (we have used it for over a year now), it is starting to become a little mishappen. We now use this one in the diaper bag for when we travel - so, it wasn't even bad enough to throw away.
If you chose to buy one of these bibs...only wash them in the dishwasher ocaisonally on the top rack.
