Pros: Great sleepy ballads for relaxing and reminiscing
Cons: None
The Bottom Line: A montage of songs dedicated to calling it quits on relationships, hopes and the mistakes of dreaming too high up in the clouds. Beautifully done.
pinkpoodlelady's Full Review: Bachelor No. 2 by Aimee Mann
The first thing that catches your eye is the unusual cover, bright avocado green with an Audubon type drawing of the extinct Dodo bird. This should tip off the listener what to expect inside, songs dedicated to walking into situations that were doomed from the start. The songs are bright and melancholy. Wait, that’s not possible. It is with Aimee Mann. Don’t you remember “Voices Carry” in her new wave “til tuesday” days? Abusive boyfriend and forlorn girlfriend all sung in that special Mann determination, strong vocals mixed with sad realities. Well, we all grow up and her style has changed from young girls in bad relationships with overbearing jerks to grown woman walking with eyes wide open into the next phase of friendships and lovers.
Since going solo Mann has spread her wings, having done 8 songs for the movie Magnolia (to which I have read the director/screenwriter Paul Thomas Anderson has said that the movie was inspired by listening to Aimee Mann’s songs) and putting out 3 solo albums. She has freed herself of corporate labels and set out as her own producer selling her own product. And it sounds fantastic.
This album creates the sense that you’re sitting down with Aimee over lunch in a nice little café while she tells you about all the wrongs that she and her friends have experienced - that they really should have known better, and that she herself has suffered some disillusionment. But Aimee is older and wiser, and you can hear the experience in her voice, less wistful and more insight, less anger and more perception.
I consider Mann to be a star poet, she refreshes tired out themes with her words and silky feminine voice. It’s like being sung to by your mother as an infant. SOOTHING.
Honestly, I haven’t listened to Mann since her til’ tuesday days.
I adore this album which was sprung on me by a good friend as she said “Listen to it! Listen to the poetry! Then tell me if you love it.”
Well I do love it and even highly recommend it.
