As most families these days, I am interested in saving money and living cheaper due to the high gas prices and increasing food costs. I ran across Backwoods Home magazine at someone's house and asked to borrow a couple of the issues. The covers talking about living in a world with ever increasing gas and food prices peaked my interest in the articles inside.
What I did like about this magazine:
The editorials are commentary on topics such as how to make money from home from enterprising folks who have started home based business.
More ideas on how to make money at home while producing food for your family at the same time.
Recipes that seem complicated such as making your own bread at home but are simple to make. Various recipes on making foods cheaper home-made.
Gardening to provide herbs and food for the family.
The back of each issue has an order form so you can order just certain issues on topics of interest.
With 96 pages in most of the magazine issues, you will find quite a few things that interest you.
Herbal relief for many illnesses are addressed in articles.
Actual color and black and white pictures of people doing the work described for working at home. Some step by step pictures too.
The current issue has many articles on being prepared in this time of rising costs and possible recession. From having your friends also live a lifestyle of preparedness so through cooperation your community will work hand in hand together to make it through to how to live for less, this issue takes on self sufficiency in a big way.
If you feel alone at how you live-stay at home parent, live in a rural community, homeschool, grow your own food, nurse your babies, co-sleep, use cloth diapers and make your own baby food at home-this magazine will warm your heart by having many articles on exactly that lifestyle!
Want to learn how to live off the grid? This magazine is a good place to start. Many articles about people who do that.

What I did not like about this magazine:
A sample issue will cost you almost $6.00.
One year subscription (6 issues) will cost about $25.00 while a two year subscription costs almost $57.00. You can subscribe for increasing prices for three years and more.
Many gun ownership articles which did not apply to me.
The poetry section seems a bit odd for this type of magazine.
There is not much else to say about this magazine besides the articles are longer than other magazines. From two to three pages long. Various different people write the articles. There are advertisements throughout and some at the end of the articles relating to the topic of the article such as "You can drill your own well water" and "Own a Wood-Mizer portable sawmill". The articles range from raising "rabbits for food and making money" to a family who was able to sell books from their home. I found the articles informative and easy to understand. In depth coverage of how to start the home based businesses and details such as feed for the bunnies and care of the farm animals.
