| Freak369's Full Review: Balance Balance Bar Gold Rocky Road |
I was a huge fan of the regular Balance Bar line; they promoted a well balanced dietary intake based on the 40-30-30 scale. When I saw the Rocky Road flavor in the Gold series I really wanted to try it to see if it tasted half as good as it looked. Being someone who is almost always on a low carbohydrate, I broke out into a sweat when I saw that this had 22 grams of carbohydrates although only 13 of them are from sugar. My local grocery store had on sale / clearance for .64 cents a bar so I grabbed a handful knowing that someone in the house would eat them. I tucked two of them away for when I had a cheat day and really looked forward to enjoying one of them. When it comes to bars like this it is really a crap shoot as to whether you are going to like the taste or not. Some have a fake chocolate taste that lingers long after you have consumer it and others give you that nasty reflux that you taste no matter how many times you brush your teeth.
Balance Bar Gold Rocky Road
As I said, bars like this are a little tricky to shop for because you never know what it is going to taste like. I do have to preface this by saying that if you are doing a low carb diet, these things will taste like absolute heaven when you are having a cheat day or taking a break. The brood thought that they were good but not great, they arent chocolate lovers for the most part and they said that the bar tasted too sweet for their taste. A lot of the taste of this depends on what youve consumed previously and how long its been since you had anything sweet. The first bite or two that I had of this was like heaven but when I had a few more bites of it later, the taste was completely different thanks to the grilled chicken I had. I am not sure if there is a regular Rocky Road flavor from Balance, this one is in the Gold series so it may have different ingredients and nutritional values from others that they make.
As far as this being an energy bar, I cant really say one way or the other if it gives you a kick. I didnt feel anything from it but I am not going to be the best judge of it since I often take energy enhancer like Stacker 2 or Stackerdrene. The brood ate them and I didnt see them bouncing off the walls and brimming with excess energy. When you look at the nutritional values of the bar youll see that you are getting a well balanced amount of protein, carbs, fat and an assortment of vitamins and minerals. This isnt something that I can consume on a regular basis if I want to stay in ketosis. 13 grams of sugar might not sound like a lot but when you are trying to keep carbs to a minimum, its a lot. For people who are trying to watch what they eat or need a between meal snack this is a good pick that, based on the ingredients, will hold you over until you can have a well balanced meal.

Price
These bars arent that expensive when you compare them to others that are on the market. I got them at my grocery store when they were on sale for .64 cents a piece. They were marked half off to make room for new flavors from Balance and still have four months until they reach their expiration date. If the whole rocky road flavor appeals to you and you want to try this, pick up a few bars and try them at different times. You cant judge the taste of it in one sitting. Stick with buying them individually until you decide whether you like the taste or not, then you can buy them buy the box and save money.
The Bottom Line
This is something that I do plan on purchasing in the future for when I go off my diet or want a sweet treat. If I cut the bar into five equal parts and have one of them a day, it wont throw me out of ketosis but it will require a good deal of will power because the taste can be rather hard to say no to. The brood didnt really flip over them so theyll be safe in the cabinet in the kitchen; sometimes I buy bars and they say they dont like them then when I go to reach for one, theres none left.
