| cmaw63's Full Review: Bass Pro Magna Spincast Reel |
During a visit to Bass Pro Shop, my husband bought a Bass Pro Magna Spincast Reel. There are 3 models to choose from: M20 (10 lb line), M30 (12 lb.) and M35 (20 lb.). We paid $39.99 + tax for the M35 model.
Specifics
The anodized aluminum body, combined with the all metal gearing gives this compact reel some weight. It felt sturdy and capable. Precision ball bearings, easy casting oscillating spool design and dual pick-up pins make this one of the easiest casting/retrieving reels we own. It has a 4.5:1 gear ratio that allows for a quicker line retrieve than the lower geared reels. The M35 reel came spooled with 130 yards of 20 lb. line and the handle can be moved to either side for right or left handed fisherman. It sits on top of the rod with a thumb release for casting. The "high-torquing Mag Drag" works well in playing a bigger fish into the boat...or it does when used correctly...
Our Use
This is my husbands primary reel, unless he's busy or not looking and I'm able to snatch it. I like the ease and ability this reel has in casting quite a distance. The retrieves are smooth and the line doesn't tangle on the way back into the reel. We have caught panfish, bass, catfish, walleye and others, with no problems from this reel. The problem we did have was "operator error".
While trolling Argyle Lake my husband had a fish hooked that was giving him quite a fight. Whatever it was, it was bigger than anything we had caught in recent years. He was intent on getting the fish into the boat, but forgot one major element. He didn't set the drag. The reel held for about 15 minutes...then the pole snapped into 3 pieces, the gears stripped and the fish ran with the line. In his desperation to get this fish into the boat he grabbed the line with his hands trying to pull it in that way. The fish was too much and the line dug into his hands. I, finally, cut the line with a knife. Whatever they spooled this reel with...it was tough and not going to break anytime soon. Afterwards, he admitted that he hadn't even thought about the drag setting.
I faxed Bass Pro Shop to get prices on new guts for the reel, a little put off that I didn't hear from them within a couple days. In four days I was amazed. There on our porch sat a box from Bass Pro with everything we needed to rebuild the M35 reel. They guarantee their reels... it was all free!
Rebuilt and being used, again, the Bass Pro Magna Spincast Reel is performing better than ever. The "operator" is performing better, also. We both like this reel and how it works. While, we haven't caught anything as big as we had that day...we will...someday.
