Pros: good ingredients, SPF 15
Cons: too heavy, caused me to break out, nauseating scent
The Bottom Line: Good ingredients do not necessarily make a good product. This one was too heavy and smelled bad. Not recommended.

With my favorite Earth Science moisturizer continually out of stock at Whole Foods, I decided to try something else. I'd heard good things about the Avalon Organics brand so I went ahead and got their Vitamin C Moisture Plus Lotion with SPF 15. Product Details This moisturizer contains Magnesium Ascorbal Phosphate, one of the most stable forms of Vitamin C that is also easily absorbed by the skin. It also contains other powerful antioxidants, including Vitamin E, Green and White tea extracts, and Melatonin. Key moisturizing ingredients include Coconut, Borage and Flax oils, in addition to soothing Aloe and Rose Hip Oils. Its orange scent comes from Sweet Orange essential oil. I know many of you are reading labels more closely, so you'll be pleased to know that Vitamin C Moisture Plus Lotion is made with 100% vegetarian ingredients. It does not contain parabens, synthetic fragrance, and is not tested on animals. The moisturizer comes in a 4 ounce bottle, labeled as appropriate for all skin types, and retails for $16.95. I bought mine at Whole Foods, but I've seen this brand in many mass market retail outlets, so it should be fairly easy to find. My impressions Vitamin C Moisture Plus Lotion is a medium-to-heavy weight lotion. It's definitely not runny and I needed to give the bottle a good shake before I could squeeze any out. As for the fragrance, it wasn't what I expected. I found it a little nauseating and not what I would call a fresh orange scent. It reminds me of the smell of rotting oranges on the ground. Okay, I used to have an orange tree in the yard, so this scent still sticks with me. Basically, it's more of a pungent orange scent, sort of like the scent of an orange peel after you zest it. But this is not surprising, as it is made with orange oil, which is extracted from orange peel through a cold press process. I also think that the addition of lavender oil adds to the strong and less than pleasing scent. I also found that this lotion was too heavy and greasy for my combination skin (oily in parts, normal in others, with some fine lines and wrinkles). It doesn't integrate easily into my skin and leaves it feeling a bit tacky, so I have to give it five minutes or so to full absorb. Vitamin C Moisture Plus Lotion actually felt more like a lotion that I would use at nighttime, except of course, for the fact that it has SPF protection. Final thoughts Vitamin C Moisture Plus Lotion was a big disappointment. Despite it having an impressive ingredients list, I feel I was misled. This lotion is appropriate only for those who have dry skin, or maybe all-over normal skin. If you've got any oiliness, you'll want to steer clear of this. I've actually broken out a few times since using it and have discontinued use. The scent is also very unpleasant and it wasn't something I looked forward to using. Although it's hard to give a well-intentioned product only two stars, that's all I feel I can give.
