Erik Stolhanske & Paul Soter play the brothers (Todd & Jan Wolfhouse) that must return their grandfathers (Donald Sutherland in a brief part) ashes to a final resting place...a mantel in the underground "beerfest" in Germany. Cloris Leachman is "gam-gam". Steve Lemme (Fink) Kevin Heffernan (Landfill) and Jay Chandrasekhar(Barry) co-star as the brothers beer drinking team members. Monique Imes plays Cherry. Jurgen Prochnow is Baron Wolfgang von Wolfhausen.
I have to admit, as a middle aged woman, after seeing the commercial advertisements on tv of bare chested women, 2 girls making out and men guzzling beer, I really had no desire to see this movie. My husband talked me into watching it with him, and I'm glad I did. The nudity & kissing scenes are really a minor part of the movie. There were plenty of laugh out loud moments in Beerfest and a couple of twists that I didn't see coming. The movie does start out with something along the lines of "Do not try drinking this much beer....YOU WILL DIE". I won't go into details of the movie, as I don't want to spoil the plot.(such as it is) I will say, I never thought training for a full year to drink beer as fast as you can could be this funny. The underground beerfest's games are different (Das Boot, Monkey Chug) and some familiar. Who hasn't played quarters at some party or another growing up?
Cloris Leachman as gam-gam is as funny as I've ever seen her. She's the one that gets the ball rolling (or beer flowing) and keeps it going to see that the team finishes what it started.
You need to watch this movie with the mindset that it was made for pure entertainment and without many expectations. You will find yourself laughing out loud at some scenes and groaning at others...but you will be entertained with some of the wacky things the team goes thru and/or do for a living, besides drink beer.
It is a the typical good guys triumph over bad guys movie, just a whole new twist on the way they do it.
