Pros: Gutsy motor, doesn't get bogged down in heavy grass
Cons: Could cut further from the spool.
The Bottom Line: A respectable little weed whacker for a respectable price. Being 12", it gets into tighter spaces. Good power as well.

| psimon's Full Review: Black & Decker 12" Automatic Feed Trimmer / Grass ... |
Here it is, the end of the summer, and I was in the unfortunate position of having my string trimmer break before my cutting season was over. I had a Black and Decker 14" electric trimmer and had been pleased with it's performance. It had been around for at least 5 years, and I felt I had gotten my moneys worth from it. Now it was time to look for a new one.
Being the end of the season, there wasn't much to choose from. What I mostly found available was the Black and Decker Edge Hog 12" trimmer. It is both an trimmer and edger, so it gave me double duty. Given my positive experience with Black and Decker products, I was happy to still find it around. I dropped my $45 at the register and took it home.
The only assembly required was to put the shield on it. Not a big deal. It snapped into place and only one screw was required. The next day I went out to tackle the lawn.
This unit is an auto feed unit. That means that you never have to "bump" the unit on the ground to release additional string. I never thought of doing that as a big deal, but I guess others do.
What I noticed was that the string never cuts the true 12" from the spool. I would suspect that it cuts more like 8" away. This isn't a real problem, but I was used to the cutting action taking place further out from the unit.
The Edge Hog does a good job of whacking off the grass and weeds. It has enough horsepower not to get bogged down in heavy grass. It also does a good job as an edger. This is possible because the head rotates on the handle so it can cut vertically instead of horizontally. I noticed as an edger it takes some practice to make sure you edge in a straight line. Time will take care of that.
Would I buy it again... yes. It does a very good job of cleanning off the growth along walls and fences, as well as cleaning up the growth along sidewalks. I feel I got a good product for the dollars I spent.
