hularider's Full Review: Black & Decker DLX850 12-Cup Coffee Maker
First, I'm a long-time fan of Black & Decker products. Whether in the workshop or in the kitchen, I've found B&D tools and appliances to be a great value; competant products for a reasonable price. Their coffee maker is no different.
Another thing I am a fan of is "basic." The fewer doodads and geegaws, the happier I am. I like this coffee maker.
Originally purchased for about $15, it took years of abuse, being battered and bounced, knocked about, and left on until the coffee was a black paste in the bottom of the pot, before finally giving up. The only reason I have not replaced it with another identical B&D is because a houseguest bought me a different brand as a gift and I'm too cheap to get another coffeemaker when I have one that works.
Anyway, my old B&D coffee maker was easy to use and easy to clean. It accepted your basic el-cheapo brand coffee filters. No fancy-schmancy stuff like timers, built-in coffee grinders, frothers, or what-have-you. Just a nice simple button to push, and for the caffine-desperate, a gadget that automatically stops the caffine drip if you want to grab an early cup.
Speaking of cups, despite the little markings that indicate it holds 12 cups, I generally get about half that many mugs of coffee from it. If a cup is 8 ounces, then 12 cups would be 96 ounces. The pot only holds 60. I have a really old pot from a long-dead coffee maker. This pot is exactly the same size, but the markings indicate 10 cups. I guess they figure a coffee cup is a different measure than a cup cup.
Whatever the size of the cup, this simple machine is ideal for those groggy morning stumbles through the kitchen.
When the current coffee maker dies, it will be replaced with another like my old Black & Decker.
