When I was in 7th grade I was homeschooled and my mom made me read this book and I have to say that it is one of the best things that she has ever done. This has helped me to analyze the differences of how people are treated when it comes to race especially at the time the book was written and especially in the south.
I would recommend that everyone read this book. Especially if they want an unbiased opinion and experience because he had to learn norms of life all over again in a way he had never had to deal with before. His whole personality changed.
I wouldn't recommend having a 7th grader read it but it should be required reading for highschool students. In my tenth grade year the public highschool made us all read "Black Boy" and while it has its merits it doesn't educate us as to the real prejudices our there like Black like me conveys. I recommended this to my English teacher and he agreed with me but said that he probably couldn't convince the school to buy 200 copies of "Black like me" which I think is very sad.
