In this book of survivalism of an extremely battered woman with her young son, she takes huge steps to disappear from the face of the earth to escape her violent cop husband. She leaves all her material possessions and family and friends behind and starts over again in an attempt to free herself from her maniacal husband.
Due to the power of Caller-ID, her son identifies to her cop husband her location. She is violently attacked by him. He grabs the son and takes off, to places presumably unknown and in this way, WINS THE BATTLE.
This book just reinforced in my mind what animals cops can be. They go over above and through the system to get what they want. They break major rules, while we citizens suffer for minor misdemeanors. We are forced to give them our respect and fear and never to answer them back or question their authority.
This woman makes every attempt to keep her child, to wait for her child, to leave information if he should ever return. It portrays a woman's never-ending suffering at the hands of her psychotic ex-husband. I don't know why Oprah chose this book. It depressed me terribly.
