This new SOMA/Mission Tokyo style sushi restaurant is best suited for trendy, SOMA, loft types new to the city and eager to impress each other in a "see and be seen" atmosphere. Pseudo-intellectuals and artists mix with a high-tech crowd for a confusing mix of buzzing cell phones, clicking laptops, and retro clothing while eating below average sushi and waiting eons for service. Combined with no parking, loud techno music, and overcrowding, this place is a "must miss," considering the dozens of finer and more authentic sushi restaurants nearby. Prices were at least 50% more than comparable restaurants. Be aware, when you eat here, you are paying for cartoons, techno music, and an all-caucasian peer group, not the food.
Food:
Average to below average sushi with overpriced beverages. We were even charged for hot tea ($2.50). Sushi seemed less than fresh. We had assorted the luncheon nigiri plates.
Service:
Waited for 45 minutes for entrees to arrive to our table while being continuously assaulted with loud techno music. Total lunch service time was 1:45 hours from seating to final check.
Decor:
Seemed authentic to the "Tokyo Sushi Bar" theme, but techno-music was way too loud and, although interesting, the large screen cartoons became annoying after a few minutes.
Overcrowded seating especially considering the # of laptop computers and cellular phones in use in the restaurant.
Special Notes, Tips or Menu Recommendations:
Parking in this neighborhood is impossible. Be prepared to use public transportation, pay for a space, or hunt for a space in the questionable adjacent Mission District. Also, if you are planning a lunch "hour," service is extremely slow. Your boss will be paging you by the time you place your order.
