| jlogansf's Full Review: Blowfish Sushi to Die For |
Blowfish—Sushi to Die For pretty much lives up to its name. But this is not your father's sushi bar. The restaurant is an upscale venue, with a funky edge. Japanese anime plays on big screen TVs over the bars, and the music has a trippy-trance vibe. The restaurant is loud, but the energy is high. Throughout our meal, the music and the sushi made me wanna dance.
The restaurant was quite busy when we arrived (okay, it was a Friday night), but the bar is accommodating and comfortable. The bar service was top notch, and the bartender watched over us with a cheerful smile.
The menu at Blowfish is eclectic, with a wide variety of nigiri, maki, and other sushi staples available. Although my experience with sushi is fairly limited, many of the maki on the menu appeared unique to Blowfish. The Blowfish Eye maki was outstanding, as was the yummy Spicy Tuna Roll. The nigiri were adequate, but didn't have enough wasabi for my taste, and tended to fall apart too easily.
If you're hungry for an appetizer while you wait for your sushi, check out the chicken pot stickers. Prepared in the japanese style, these little pockets of seasoned meat and vegetables were the tastiest I've found.
For the non-sushi inclined, there are also traditional cooked Japanese dishes, such as the delicious chicken teriyaki: chunks of chicken in the ubiquitous sauce, accompanied by stir-fried vegetables and a creative rice presentation.
Table service was decent, and our server quite friendly. We were there fairly late, and I imagine the service can get a bit frenzied when the restaurant is busy. Two (minor) complaints: the lack of specials—no chalkboard showcasing particularly fresh or unusual sushi treats, and ordering would be much easier with a sushi checklist to mull over.
Prices are moderate at Blowfish. We escaped for about $40 per person, including cocktails and appetizers—although we didn't dive in to some of the more expensive maki.
I would certainly recommend Blowfish for a casual evening out. Expect a bit of a wait on busy nights, or try making reservations. And be prepared for a fun, energetic evening, with plenty of entertaining visuals and some tasty Japanese treats.
