cmaw63's Full Review: Laurie Notaro - Autobiography of a Fat Bride: True...
Fat bride? Check. Well, I prefer fluffy. A pretend Adulthood? Double check! Why would I want to read about my life as it is lived in a parallel universe by Laurie Notaro? Because it is much more amusing when it happens to someone else.
55 Tales Of A Pretend Adulthood
I knew right away that I was going to sympathize with and root for Laurie. The first of the 55 tales is about her losing her boyfriend to a hippie chick with corn rowed hair and a van. Been there, done that...but the hippie chick was my cousin. My parents asked me to bow out gracefully as it would cause bad family relations...at least Laurie got to say what she really wanted to. Thank you for letting me pretend I said all of the things you did Laurie.
If you've ever had a boyfriend, husband or mom...if you've had a bad relationship with anyone, including your doctor or a pet...if you've bought a house and dealt with neighbors and a handyman there is something in this book that will make you laugh out loud.
Wedding plans and an overbearing mother? You're not alone. Laurie gives plenty of laughs while leading us through her mother's guilt inducing "get her way" kind of wedding. After the wedding? The reality of sharing space with another human being, the husband, brings a new round of humor.
On to buying a house. The trials and tribulations of being a home owner has never been more funny. The handyman that "moves in" because he has a hit out on him and needs a place to hide makes me wonder about my handyman that hasn't been seen for a year and still needs to finish my roof.
Each of the 55 tales is a few pages long, making this 253 page book easy to read. You're not going to lose your place if you put the book down, as each one involves a portion of Laurie's life. All are funny...some are funnier than others....some are laugh out loud funny.
The Grand Finale
This book is not for those easily offended. There are tales involving booze, sex, bodily functions and swearing. I found in Autobiography of a Fat Bride: True Tales of a Pretend Adulthood that I was laughing, instead of offended.
That I could relate to some of Laurie's tales makes the book that much better. Knowing someone else has seen the humor in what we call life and being able to write it down for all of us to share makes me want to call Laurie Notaro a pretend friend.
