Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, Mary Olsen Kelly - Chicken Soup for the Breast Cancer Survivor's Soul: Stories to Inspire, Support and Heal
1truluv's Full Review: Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, Mary Olsen Kell...
I suppose if you have read one Chicken Soup book, you will know that this one is not much different. Short stories about survivors of this horrid disease, meant to help and support the breast cancer patient/survivor. I'm sure that none of you is aware of this little known fact, but I am one of those people, who survived breast cancer. I was diagnosed in 1997 and had a bi-lateral right side mastectomy. Five months of chemo, along with the total hair loss and grieving that goes along with the loss of a body part.
On November 8th, 2006 I went through the horror all over again. This time left side mastectomy. Only difference is this time, I had reconstruction done at the same time. Yes, I am talking two weeks ago.
Now to the book, which was given to me by my sister-in-law for my birthday on the 17th of this month.
The contents are as follows:
1-Love
2-Support
3-Challenges
4-Character
5-Healing
6-Courage
7-Survival
8-Gratitude
The stories are very short, some written by family members, some by the women going through/having gone through, breast cancer. They are all very sweet as all of the stories are about the unconditional love of family and friends.
What amazed to me was, the I'm going to die attitude that almost every woman had when they were told they had breast cancer. Or maybe it's me. I never one time thought about dying. Neither time.
The stories are uplifting and some humorous, some written with real emotion. I, personally did not get as much from this book as I am sure my sister-in-law would have liked. For someone who has been down this awful much traveled road, it struck me as a little sappy. Every story, beginning with the angst of what to do next and following with enormous support and an outpouring of love from every one they know, to the happily ever after ending.
I live in a small town and know quite a few people. People I thought, and who said, that they were concerned for me. The only people who showed up at my door were my best friends two youngest daughters ( 18 & 23 yr. old ). They came by to help me out the first day home from the hospital. No one else. No one came over to visit, one friend brought food by but, didn't have time to come in. My husband went out to the car to retrieve the food. I am really not trying to have a pity party here, only to let you know that in reality, everything isn't always pretty.
The authors of these books are major entrepreneur's and writers to their credit. They are crusader's and world wide speakers and advocates for breast cancer. I applaud
their effort to get these books out in an effort to comfort and support breast cancer survivors. They just need to be a little more real.
In conclusion
I would recommend anyone going through breast cancer for the first time to read this book. I might make you feel better about what you are about to go through.
