Pros: Very enlightening. Gives new insight into Muslim thinking.
Cons: Nothing that I recall
The Bottom Line: I'm certain very few Muslim women will get a chance to read this book. It's too bad too, because it might make women of Islam see things a little different.
This is a remarkable story and a remarkable woman. She and her siblings suffered genital mutilation at the hands of her grandmother at a young age and as a teen was she became a hard core head to toe covered Muslin in Nairobi, Kenya where they lived at the time. Blessed with the ability to read and speak English, she, a few of her friends and classmates devoured romance paperback novels, which for some reason were plentiful. These books depicted a life of freedom, romance and marrying for love. A life that none of them could even comprehend.
Little by little she began to wonder about the crazy life she was living, and if the life depicted in the books was typical of everywhere outside the Muslim world. When she reached the age of majority her often absentee father (they didn't know it but he had another family) arranged a marriage to a Canadian Muslim.
She was against any arranged marriage, but her father wouldn't relent. On the flight to Canada, there was a stopover in Germany and knowing a family there she sought refuge. While waiting for the government to make a decision about her staus she snuck over the border into Holland, where she bloomed as a woman's right activist. Even becoming a Dutch legislator. Eventually, she outraged Muslim men. Her life was threatened and she now lives in hiding.
I doubt if Ayaan herself was the actual writer of the book, but whoever wrote it, did a commendable job. The story, was clear, flowed well and was laid out in perfect order. The writing itself flowed well and was easily understandable.
CONCLUSION
Ayaan Hirsi Ali is a true role model for the many beaten down women of Islam. When other Muslim women take similar paths, despite what the Muslim men want, life for Muslim women in general will gradually change for the better.
