| pantazis5's Full Review: Laura Ingalls Wilder - Little House on the Prairie |
Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote 8 books for children. The first was Little House in the Big Woods The second book was Little House on the Prairie.
Little House on the Prairie is perhaps the best known title because of the popular television show that starred Michael Landon. However, the show and the book were very different.
The book Little House on the Prairie began when the Ingalls family, Ma, Pa, Mary, Laura and Baby Carrie left their little house in the big woods of Wisconsin and headed toward Kansas, or Indian Territory.
The pilot movie of the Little House on the Prairie television series was very much about the book. However, the television series placed the family at Plum Creek, which is really the fourth book of the Little House series of books by Laura Ingalls Wilder.
Anyway, Little House on the Prairie is illustrated by Garth Williams with black and white pencil sketches of the Ingalls family. This story is written for young readers and has 22 chapters. It has 335 pages. The book is available from Scholastic. Children can get it from their book list order forms from school very inexpensively. My copy cost 4.99. This story was originally copyrighted in 1935. Two years after the Little House in the Big Woods.
This is a story about a family that travels by wagon with their bull dog following along behind the wagon. The family is searching for a new home. The settle in the heart of Indian Territory. This story about a little family traveling in the 1870s is a nice adventure story. The family meets up with Indians and are able to get along with them. The family builds a home and meets Mr. Edwards their new friend. Mr. Edwards brings the girls their presents from Santa, pennies and candy from town. The girls are excited during the storm when Mr. Edwards comes to their door covered in ice and snow.
The family suffers through fever and prairie fires. Pa goes to town and leaves the females alone on the prairie and they are visited by Indians.
The Indians in Kansas territory are depicted as friendly and honorable. The Ingalls family accidentally built their home three miles into Indian Territory. They know that the soldiers will be coming to move them, so they move themselves bofore the soldiers can come.
The picture on the front cover, of two girls looking out through the back of an old fashioned covered wagon is a perfect image of the book. The family begins the book moving from Wisconsin in their wagon, and they end the book moving to Minnesota in their wagon.
Laura Ingalls is a little Tomboy. She loves to be with her father and enjoys the adventures of moving from one place to another. Mary Ingalls is the quieter girl who would like to be settled like her mother.
I recommend this story. It is a nice historical piece that we can all learn a great deal from regarding American history. The families that traveled West and the Westward Expansion. It is a non-violent way to read about the Indians and the white settlers and the troubles they had with getting along. This story can open the pathway for many discussions.
While this story is written for 2nd graders, I remember reading and rereading it when I was a little girl. Every time I read it I learned something else. It is a wonderful story.
Surprisingly it is one of the three books from the Little House Series that did NOT win the Newbury Honor medal.
