talyseon's Full Review: John Ostrander - Star Wars Legacy 4
Star Wars Legacy: Volume Four Alliance. Written by John Ostrander.
The Legacy Era takes place 137 years after the Battle of Yavin. The Galactic Alliance is fragmented, and suffering from a war on two fronts, with two empires, the Imperial fragment, under the command of the ‘Legitimate' emperor, Roan Fel, and the freshly Usurped Empire, led by Emperor Darth Krayt, and his Sith.
Things are not going well for the Alliance. With the Sith attack on the Jedi, and the heavy incursions into alliance worlds, the Alliance fleet is severely depleted, reaching a point of mere survival. Unless Admiral Stazi can reverse the trend, the navy of the Alliance will be little more than a pirate band, raiding for sustenance. To that end, he chooses a critical target, the Imperious, a Super Star Destroyer nearing completion at the ship yards ringing Mon Calimari.
They have inside help; security codes provided by Gail Garan, the Mon Calimari member of the tribunal who represent what is left of the Senate. He plans to take the blame, knowing that the Sith reprisals will be severe until they find the guilty party. He gives this information to his niece, Monia, a pilot in Rogue Squadron.
Of course, such a tempting target could be a trap, but half the battle in avoiding a trap is knowing of its existence.
What follows is a tale of espionage and intrigue, plots and counter plots, complete with treacherous toydarian informants, radical testosterone laden Rouge pilots, human and dug, and a pair of mysterious Imperial Knights, strong in the force, short on manners.
Opposing this band are the combined forces of Admiral Valan and the Imperial fleet, with the assistance of the Quarran Sith, Darth Azard. Valan has beaten Stazi before.
The last tale (the first story arc is three issues 20-22, the last is issue 27) involves Darth Krayt's infection with Coral Seeds by the Yuuzhan Vong. Darth Wyyrlok, the Chagrian advisor to Emperor Krayt, has been seeking a cure for his master's condition. One of the avenues has been consulting the Sith Holocron containing the wisdom of Darth Andeddu, an ancient Sith Lord who was able to live after the death of his body by his mastery of the Force. Hoping to learn of something that will lead to a cure, he travels to the Sith's ancient mausoleum, hoping to find forgotten lore.
What he finds is a bit more. Not only is there a primitive Dark Side using degenerate race inhabiting the place, but there is something...more.
This story explores exactly what it means to be Sith, and does it in a fairly entertaining way. It certainly gives you insight into Darth Wyyrlok.
The series, which is supposed to follow the last Skywalker, Cade, has wandered in this volume away from that tale, and taken a look at the wider galaxy. Cade and his friends do not appear.
One other slight down note is this; they use multiple artists. I much prefer a consistent use of the same artist within a story, however, the artists in question, Omar Francia and Alan Robinson are both nicely skilled with a solid realistic style. The major complaint I have against Francia is his rendition of the Mon Calamari; the cool guppy men come across looking vaguely retarded and misshapen.
All in all, an excellent volume, and while I was hoping to find out what was happening with Cade Skywalker, this is a highly entertaining volume.
The future of Star Wars continues here! The Sith again control the galaxy, but the remains of the Galactic Alliance fight on to restore justice . . . ...More at Buy.com Marketplaces
