Mark Kurlansky has yet again hit the nail square on the head. Whatever he talks about, Cod, Salt, Oysters or the Basque, he gets it. His latest work which tackles my hometown of Gloucester, Ma is no different - He understands Gloucester.
Without spoiling too much, the book is tale of one of the oldest settlements in the US. Gloucester is America's oldest fishing port and the book tells of our many triumphs as well as our current trials as the city and the fishing industry are in a state of flux.
Kurlansky chronicles the lives of fishermen and their families from both past and present. The highliners of the glory days of sail, as well as large and close-knit "Italian" community that originally came here to fish.
This is not the first book of Kurlansky that talks about Gloucester, but this is the one that paints the picture. I tend to agree with him that Gloucester is America's most original town because I grew up here and you can always pick a Gloucester native out of the crowd.
Anyone with an interest in the sea, maritime history, fishing, sailing or American maritime art should read The Last Fish Tale. Of course I am naturally biased, but there truly is something to this special little place we call Gloucester and that is why guys like myself appreciate when outsiders see it the way we do.
Mark Kurlansky understands the plight of the commercial fisherman, in which the fate of Gloucester is tied. And as someone who grew up in a fishing family, with many friends still in the business, I can say that Kurlansky has done a fine job telling the other side of the story.
